your favorite scale

Depends on the subject.  WWII forward fighters 1/48.  Airliners and transports 1/144.  Cars 1/24 or 1/25.  Figures 1/16.  Armor, which I rarely do would be 1/35.  But forced to choose one I'd say 1/48.  Thinking about why... I'd say it has to to with the availability of subjects.

I like 1/72 - in that scale you can model a lot of things and put them on one shelf for comoparison - aircraft, helicopters and tanks, small helicopters and big airplanes (B-52). Nowadays more and more aromor subjects are available, too. They don't call it OTS - One True Scale for nothing!

But I also started modeling armor and figures in 1/35 years ago, when there weren't enough tanks in 1/72 to be had.

Hey, Keavdog. Right now I'm building in 1/72 scale. I don't have a lot of room to display my models so 1/72 scale works out pretty good. I'm building the Century Series fighters in 1/72 scale and I'm participating in Bish's 80 Years of Airfix group build and those submissions are 1/72 scale. I still have some 1/48 scale kits in reserve that will get built some time down the road but 1/72 scale is the focus right now.

I like 1/72 scale for aircraft and the few armor pieces I build. Mostly for conservation of display space. Two Japanese Type 95 tanks will fit in the palm of your hand! 

Also enjoy the 1/144 aircraft. The selection and quality is getting much better, companies like Sweet are putting out amazing kits.

Cost is another factor, I just can't afford the 1/32 kits!

I do airplanes in 1/48 scale, tanks and wheeled vehicles in 1/35, ships in 1/700 or box scale.  I never pay any attention what scale kits come in.  My friends don't care.  I've built them in all scales over time.  It's a heck of a weird collection.

My favorites are:

Aircraft - 1/48

Auto - 1/24

Armour - 1/35

Ships - 1/350

Reason: - I'm an old fart with failing eyesight and the other usual failings. I've slowly finished all the smaller kits, unless there's some burried somewhere in the stash. Recently refurbished a 1/32 B24J for the museum and found it a real joy to work on. Even trying to paint some of the details that needed touch-up was easy. Wish I had the room to store those larger ones.

1/48th because it's the scale I prefer to work with.

For many years I worked mainly in 1:72, they are very satisfying when completed, easier to keep in a smaller space and look a bit more "like models," rather than the 48th and 32nd sizes. I keep almost none, kids get the majority and Mom's like the smaller size for a youngsters collection.

I'm approaching 79 years, getting shakier with time and vision isn't so great now, so it will be 1:48th going forward. Which leaves me with a stash upwards of 100.

Can't seem to get VA faciility near my home, (Springfield, Oregon,) interested enough to return my calls for donation of those kits. Goldhammer, if you see this could you please try to help? PM me if so.

Typically most of my kits are 1/48.  Then there are a few 1/72 of larger aircraft(B-58, B-24, C-130, C-54).  But I do enjoy the little ones every now and then as well. I have a few 1/144 Hercs, and a KC-135.  Also when you talk about big stuff(C-5 Galaxy) anything bigger than 1/144 and you'll need a bigger house. 

I build a L O T  of train stuff so ... 1/87 scale is my favorite.

But, I will build anything so I have dabbled in  every scale there is.

SHIP'S : 1/350  ( I would preffer 1/144, but just TRY and find a 1/144 aircraft carrier !!!  )

Plane's 1/72 and larger

ARMOR: 1/35

CAR"S / TRUCK'S 1/25

I dont really care for the 1/700 ship's ... their just too small.

Sci-fi I try to get in the same scales as some of the "real" kits I have. 

The reason is I do like to add more details, and smaller scales this would be more difficult. I give A LOT of credit to braille scale guys who add PE to an aircraft or armor!

Depends on the genre and the specific subject.  In general, the larger the dimensions of the subject, the smaller the scale.  For ships I built 1:350 for a long time, but lack of display space has caused me to go to 1:700.  For planes I don't build many 1:144 fighters, but that scale is great for larger bombers and newer airliners, else I build 1:72.  For the fighters I build mostly 1:72 and 1:48, depending on subject and kit. I built a few 1:32, but no longer have any display space for them. 

Not that much of a selection in car kits, so build 1/24 or 1/25 kits.  However, for scratch builds I have built some larger scale, and someone just traded me a 1:12 Fiat.  I have built a number of large scale engines, depending on specific subject.  Aircraft engines are mostly 1:8, while auto engines are usually in larger scale.

forgot my big laker (Great Lakes bulk carrier models- ore boats).  On older smaller 19th century stuff I used 1:96 scale, for modern ones I use 1:192.  I like architectural scale, especially for scratch stuff.  Easy to convert dimensions to model size since all contain common factor of 12.

Armor 1/35. Airplanes, if 2 engines or more 1/72, single engine 1/48 but not exlusivly.

The older I get the larger the scale..at 1/10th figures.

My two most bought scales are 1/48 and 1/35. 

My, 35th exclusively for armor

                     1/48 for MOST aircraft

                      1/32 for SOME aircraft

                       1/16 scale cars...hard to find the cool ones, like a "Big Daddy" Don Garletts rail, rear engine not the slingshot.

                       1/350 for ships because any smaller and it winds up a glue bomb.

I'm not sure I have one, but I like my models to be roughly dinner plate sized or smaller.

I have a few 1/350 aircraft carriers that are just silly big, very time consuming to work on.

I find 1/700 a good scale for steel navy stuff, 1/72 a good scale for most aircraft, 1/144 a good scale for airliners, 1/32 or 1/48 a good scale for small aircraft like racing planes.

1/9 to 1/12 for bikes, 1/6 to 1/9 for figures, I don't built much in cars but I've tried 1/43 and it was too small for me.

Plane's I'll build 1/48 and smaller. My reasoning is cost mostly. 32nd scale can be pretty expensive. Also my display probably wouldn't handle larger scales. As it is anything bigger then roughly 20" wingspan would probably be outside display

I will build a 1:200 scale aircraft when I see one I like.  I don't find a very big selection.

For ships, when i scratchbuild I use 1:192, which is 1:16 inch per foot.  When I scratchbuild I like those architectural scales, which are divisible by 12, and result in such and such fraction of inch per foot- makes scaling easy.

1/48 for aircraft, and to a lesser degree, 1/72.  I don't have a lot of display space, so it's a good combination of size and detail.  I do have some single-engined aircraft in 1/32, though, too, mostly classic Revell kits.

For ships, it's 1/700, for a similar reason.

For metal figures, toy soldiers, it's 54mm.

I also work in some other scales, on things that caught my interest.  Maschinen Krieger kits, for example, are mostly in 1/20.  That's a nice scale for the figures associated with the genre.  And I have a small collection of 1/1200 wargame ship models.

1/43 for racing cars (Tameo, SMTS, Provence Moulage, Starter, etc.), but I do also have 1/25 scale metal kits by Southeastern Finecast and several 1/12 by Tamiya.
