Football? or Modeling? Not a Rant !
Posted by Tanker - Builder on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 8:26 AM

Well;

Football is a sport way off from my liking. Now modeling, I can model for hours and not feel like I got run over by a train. The mindset for football the way it's played here in the states is Smash Ball.

Who's got the ball? Run him over, Tackle him to the ground, If he gets hurt, Oh Well it's part of the game . Hogwash !! I worked my whole life and make less than a Football player on sicklist.

I don't like any big money sport. Why? Well they forget who pays their bills. When's the last time you went to a pro game and darned near paid half your paycheck for a Nose Bleed seat?

I think most pro sports have gotten out of the realm where the working man can afford to go to a local game even . I do know as a retired person, if Green Bay was playing the Longhorns I couldn't afford a ticket on my income.

Many folks working, make no more than I do on Social Security. We can't even afford a ticket to a Spurs basketball game! Nope, I'll stick with modeling. At least I can afford most of it.

Whatever you think, don't go there, I have met many of the Spurs and they are not above spending a little time with their everyday fans. That is sportsmanship. They show up at our train show even. Unannounced! Just for their kids.

Haven't seen a Longhorn or Cowboy Player there yet. Some of them might like trains, you think? I just don't get it. If Sports is so Great then why don't we have ,say a real World Series in Baseball. The U.S. Isn't the Whole World and there some great foreign teams out there. Get my thinking? Sports Fans.

Is Football an Olympic Sport? Modeling is a worldwide Hobby. Our Football is NOT a worldwide sport. Nuff said. Now,when I sit at my bench an listen to movie themes and build I feel uplifted. I tries once to build an watch a game between the Raiders and the 49ers. I got so mad at them I massed up a model. So music is where I go now.

I still watch Little League Baseball. Great Sportsmanship! Great games and wonderful attitudes ! I don't know of too many Baseball Players with mental injuries in the big leagues unless it happens which it rarely does!

I think I will leave this alone now.

I gave up on the nfl after all the bs and the chargers left sd.  Dont follow many other pro sports.  But I dont fault any of them for making the money they do.

The organizations have created a product and a market like any other business.  There success is due to demand.  So look to the fans if you dont like it.

I dont like the primadonna attitude of some of the athletes however.

I am a big fan of college football.  Go Aztecs!

Thanks,

John

I bet the popularity of this game dwindles as time goes on. I think its days are numbered.

People are learning that head injuries have longer lasting effects than previously known. It's just a matter of time before a school district gets sued and insurance companies won't cover it.

That's my opinion.

As some may have noticed on another post, I have sworn off most professional sports, with football at the top of the list. Not to mention the absolutely ridiculous salary, a good percentage are not 'professional' in life and not particularly good role models. Frankly, pro atheletes should he held, by contract, to a higher standard as kids tend to look up to them. While many give back to their respective communities, the majority don't unless it is done as a whole team thing so its mandatory. Then there is the politics .  .  . I'll not go there as it rather spins me up.

Ted, as for head injuries, which are an important factor, especially for kids, I have to ask this; How can a pro footballer player have the audacity to try and sue anybody over a concussion? for that amount of cash, you would think that they had a clue what they were getting into. And they chose this profession! It's the epitomy of a frivolous lawsuit.

It's like insurance companies. If I ran one, any illness with a cause directly related to smoking would not be covered, Period! We've known that smoking was bad for people for over three generations. If people are still smoking, it's their problem. And it's the same issue with concussions. If you intentionally go into a field where they are common, you should have to save a chunk of that hideous paycheck to cover your own medical issues.

Just my opinion.

We need to get you a handle, DeepSea. Any thoughts?

Football players sue the NFL I guess, or at least negotiate. Why, because at some point the Owners will dig around in the cushions of the luxury suite and toss them a handful just to make them go away.

Insurance companies will cover smokers but they charge a higher premium. It’s worth the payouts in return for a bigger pool. The big losers there are the rest of us who have to pay premiums to cover the riskier behaviors of the others.

Where I lose it with the NFL is the sheer arrogance of the Owners. I’ve had clients who were football teams, baseball teams, basketball teams and college sports operations.

The NFL alone really stand out as the super rich big business end.

A prime example is this protest business. I understand that the fans don’t like it, but the fans also don’t like spending $ 500 to take the other and kids to game, have a hot dog and a coke and pay extra to park.

If the Owners has been smart they’d say ok MR. Quarterback. Welcome to our practice squad, do your thing and see ya at the end of your contract.

Instead they invite a anti-trust investigation on themselves, anger those fans who support the protests, and create a lot of ill will.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I've never paid attention to any sports.  Football among them.  My wife enjoys watching skaters.  Yawn.  Not me.

I just build and paint tanks and airplanes.  Hey, Big Bang Theory  really hit home (oh no, a sports metaphor), with me.

Nickname: O'C, because in the military you don't get a first name.

Callsign: Outrider, Used in aviation, strike rescue, tactical work, and as an alias for cowboy action shooting.

Real Name: Brian O'Connor, used in business, non fiction, and comparitively normal life (whatever the hell that is?).

Other: Brian Patrick O'Connor, used by my Mom, but only when she's really peeved at me.

I love and watch all four major pro sports, and have been watching them for 50 years now.I don’t like some of the changes on and off the field, but to me the games overcome all of those imperfections,I don,t look up to players, they are not my role models, nor do I encourage young people to look to them.I like some,I dislike some, but it,s all about the games.I don,t ever see myself quitting or the leagues going away anytime soon.My wife and I just love going to baseball games, have been to a dozen or so major league parks around the country, and now check out the Asheville minor league team close to us.

To answer the question by TB,well for me both, why would I have to choose,I often combine both, listening to a game or sports talk while at the bench, nothing will get me away from the bench as long as I have my physical abilities.

What he said. When I'm at my hobby bench it's build and listen to Epic Music on YouTube. After that the major sports I follow are Formula 1, Indycar, IMSA, and St. Louis Cardinals.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

I second the motion of models and music.

My take on football is this; why would I want to spend my hard earned money to go see 22 grown men, supposedly college educated, chase each other around a muddy field and beat each other half to death risking serious brain and bodily injuries for the simple possession of an object that in the final evaluation bears a striking resemblance to a turd wearing shoelaces?

Is it too much to have both?

Not really, but the antics of a few have pissed off a LOT of folks.

If one takes an action while wearing the uniform of an organization, that is not part of the organization’s primary function, and is outside the norms of standard conduct, and the organization does nothing to address the action, that is at the very least a tacit endorsement by the organization of that action. Most companies, organizations, agencies, etc. explicitly ban doing any such thing while in the pay of and uniform of that agency. That is not infringing upon their Constitutional 1st Amendment Right.

I enjoy most sports. I enjoy football as a game itself. I do not care for, to paraphrase Ike, the “profesional sports/media complex” that as grown up around us in the past half century. While the athletes can be admired for their skills, strength, stamina, etc., in the long run, it is only a game. Their exertions and activities decide or affect nothing aside from entertaining a number of people for a short time.

It always makes me laugh when people talk about their favorite team and say “we” in the sentence. The person is not a player on the team, on the support staff of the team, or some other peripheral payed member. They are not out there on the field participating in the event. They are a spectator, who is supporting one side or another. Nothing more, nothing less. They make no material contribution to the contest, only financial to those put on the contest.

I dont understand the question. TB’s post sounds more like a rant against pro sports, rather than a comparison between the two pastimes. I agree with everything TB said about the the cost of sports today, athletes salaries, and their attitudes towards the fans. But I’m still able to sit down and watch a game. I dont watch as much as I did a few years ago, but I still enjoy watching my home teams.

And sometimes, I even model while I’m watching football, so yes, you can have both.

Hi, all.  Yes, it’s Toshi,

I’ve been away for a couple of months but have been busy with my and Mrs. Toshi’s health improvements.  As for the NFL?  I only started to watch football for the first time in my life since 2008.  It was an inspiration to see a 40yr. old Brett Favre as a Viking to play against his old team the Packers and saying nothing but positive words for the Packers and their fans after the game. That was my healing point and guide to do more; AKA: Modeling.

I now look forward to the NFL season as well as enjoying building with my 3yr. old grandson Ezra.  Corporate anything has it‘s ups and downs.  Think, Monogram, Revell, Tamiya etc. to name a few.  As bad as pro sports?  Maybe not but a business nonetheless.  Thats what the freedoms we in America enjoy.  Choices.  And thank you to all the vets that have served.

As for costs, everything and I mean everything is just ridiculously expensive and Mrs. Toshi and I for one can’t afford to go to a NFL game on a fixed income.  Even a musical concert cost is expensive.  So I stay home in comfort and watch several or all NFL Sunday games on NFL Redzone and enjoy models, family, and music thanking whatever God you believe in to be healthy and alive.

Your Friend, Toshi

Toj, I believe that Cbaltrin was being fecetious in his question as this is a modelling site not a football / sports site. Let's keep it light guys.

Las Vegas Raiders

Arizona Cardinals

Washington Pink Bunnies (Hey, sooner or later they are going to change their name)

Names like these don't make it worth watching anymore.

I did like listening to football while building, but mostly the local highschool games or through the Chiefs radio network where the actual annoucer of the game was broadcasted.  Listening to the major networks is like listening to nails on a chalkboard.  Those guys hardly announce the game and spend most of the time with gossip and spouting useless statistics.

Along the lines of "The goal in football is to possess the football and not give up the football so that the running back can carry the football without having the football stripped by the defensive back in order to move the football down the football field and carry the football into the end zone."

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Having grown up in Minnesota the only sport I ever cared about was hockey.  I never played "organized" hockey, preferring the midnight pick-up games at the park after they turned out the lights.  You can suddenly gain an understanding of mortality when you hear, but don't see, a puck whiz by your head at 75 miles per hour!  Big Smile

One of my favorite hockey moments was seeing the North Stars beat the Islanders in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 1981.  I was in the rafters of Met Center (later torn down and replaced by that god-awful Mall of America) for that game and the noise was insane.

But in later years I started to care less and less about hockey, and now it's been more than a decade since I've watched even a single game.  Football?  Never watch it.  Baseball?  Never watch it.  Basketball?  Never watch it.  Golf?  Sometimes watch it when I want to take a nap.

It was never about the cost of attending, or the ridiculous salaries of pro athletes, or anything else.  I think I've just mellowed so much with age, that all the chest-beating violent competition and rabid home-town fandom just seems stupid and silly to me now.

So instead, I now peacefully build models of terrible flying murder machines.
Yes, I see the paradox.

Cheers,
Mark
