SoCal Fires
Posted by keavdog on Friday, October 25, 2019 6:17 PM

Had a bit of a scare today.  The Sawday fire in Ramona, CA was about 5 miles east of my house.  We got the evacuation notice around 10:00AM but the great fire crews from CalFire and the forrest service halted the forward spread and limited the damage to 100 acres and 1 or 2 structures destroyed.  All this going on during Santa Ana conditions - for those that don't know these are hot dry winds blowing from the east that were gusting up to 70MPH.  This time of year in California we are plagued with these fires.  The Santa Anas are nice if weren't for the damned fires!

We have a fire attack base in town and they have 2 Grumman S2T turbo tracker fire planes.  Did this conversion a year or so ago in appreciation

Thanks,

John

Copy that John. We're about ten miles east of last year's Carr Fire, and are bracing for 50mph+ winds over the weekend along with a PG&E shutdown thru Monday(?). It's hearts in our throats time here in California - wishing you a safe end to fire season.

On a happier note, your ST2 conversion is one of my favorite WIP posts and finished models here in the forums, and yes, we do appreciate CalFire.

Ya - best wishes for you as well.  BTW I have the OV-10 spotter/command on the bench.  About 90% built and almost ready for paint.  Unfortunately it's going to be in the older Cal Fire markings - still cool though.

Thanks,

John

Keavdog, I can relate. I used to work at Barona Casino. I was there back in 07 when the fire went thru there and down Wild Cat Canyon. It was incredible. Scary as heck.

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"

I was in Scripps Ranch for the 2003 Cedar fire.  300+ of my neighbors lost their homes.  I was managing little league baseball at the time and 1/2 my kids showed up with nothing.  Community came together and provided gloves, pants etc.

For 2007 I was evacuated but didn't have as much impact personally.  Ya these fires a ***!

Thanks,

John

Keep your bailout bags ready guys. I have worked so many fires from the Sheriff side in LA County over the past 30 years... They can get pretty hairy indeed and move unpredicatably and so quickly.

Thanks - we've been packed and ready for a couple days...long Santa Ana.  And my poor American flag has literally been shredded.  I have a new one to put up but I waiting for the winds to die down.   This pic is from this morning - still blowing pretty good out here.

Thanks,

John
