Aerospace reporting
Posted by Don Stauffer on Monday, October 28, 2019 9:13 AM

I have long been amazed at how bad reporting on aerospace stories is.  Like the reporter describing a light twin prop plain departing at a local airport as a jet, or the story of a C-130 being shot down as the downing of a "military jet plane".

Last night on their NBC news they mentioned an up-coming story about a satellite that crashed in Ohio.  As they got into the story they showed wreckage that had no burn evidence at all, and flimsey structure that had landed virtually intact.  As the story continued, it turned out to be a high-altitude balloon payload.  Evidently to them anything up at high altitude is a satellite!

That's alright Don.

Do you ever watch anything with the closed Captioning on? They must have to worst spellers in creation. Not only that ,sometimes they get the facts very different to what the person in saying.    T.B.

Yeah, drives me nuts. Also makes me worry about the accuracy of other stories I'm not as knowledgable about.

Pfft, have you ever been assoiated with anything that ended up on the news, be it good or bad? After it airs you probably say "that's not what happend". well EVERY story ins't what happend. They couldn't get a story streight if they lived it themselves, not even the weather. A waste of airtime.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Exactly.  I don't think there is anything neferious, I think it is just lack of checking and editing.  Also notice this in reports about automobiles.  The reporter uses terms they are not really as knowledgable as they think they are.  I have seen crashes termed headon or T-bone crashes where the crash was not as described- I think the reporter was just using terms he had heard but did not really know the meaning of.
