My first build of 2020
Posted by stikpusher on Thursday, January 2, 2020 3:10 PM

I built this baby yesterday. A 1/1 scale Oklahoma Joe side smoker. It may not be a model, but it sure needed assembly. Heavy too! Had to have my other half help with quite a few of the steps. Sucker weighs almost 200 lbs.... Now to try it out...

LOL! Oh yeah... 95% of my stash and builds have been moved, but are still packed. My workbench is here, but most of my build supplies are still in CA... Tony, you are oh so right about no model builds in 36 hours...

Gary & Bish... it does need more rust (not too much though, I will be taking better care of this beast) and lots of smoke soot... one of these days soon....

Now should it be mesquite, hickory, or applewood...

All three, with some alder and cherry tossed in.  And don't forget the maple syrup basting.  Wrap a couple of pieces in bacon to boot.

Yes those are heavy. I took a part time job at wally world for a while some time ago and had to assemble those. Very well built and heavy duty.

If you come to Texas we have a few hogs on our place that would look great on that smoker.

Nice!  Now for some ribs, some pork butts, and some beef brisket!

Oh boy, you're gonna have fun with that.

Some of my best grilled meals have been prepared on smokers. i don't have one, so it's always been friends or family.

I suggest you try a turkey sometime. My Bro-in-Law did one long ago, and I still think about that Thanksgiving dinner.

Enjoy!

The Cadillac of BBQ! Now you'll need a new freezer for the hog, half steer...

And dang, you can eat off that floor!

Guys, I’ll let you know once the smoker is in operation. In the past I’ve smoked pork loins, brisket, chicken, turkey, corn, potatoes... I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do with this one...

UP, that’s a recently epoxied floor with almost no use in that area. I hope to keep it looking nice as long as I can...
