What was the most powerfull thing you have driven?

Mach 71 - An old friends brother was a FE on the C-5, name was Davis. I had met him once and he told me he was a friend of another FE that became a country music entertainer following retirement. Maybe you've heard of him, "Box Car Willie."

I was on vacation in the early 90's, wife and I stopped in Branson, Missouri for a couple of days, at breakfast we saw Willie, he went around to say hi to folks and sign autographs. I asked him if he remembered my friends FE brother, HELL YES I DO!

He spent several minutes telling us about their layovers, when trips would cross paths, (often.) Lot's of partying, poker games, etc. I gave him my friends address, so he could contact his brother and reconnect with Willie, which he did.

They stayed in touch for several years, Willie lived in Branson, his old FE friend lived in Maine, they went back and forth for long visits until the first one passed away. I was told Willie had a real liking for lobster, his friend lived on the water and had a boat, good times to be had.

Yep.

I got an email from my mom one day and she said your future BiL is on a mission somewhere (at that point I knew he was a FE on a FRED).  So about 2 hrs later I hear a C-5 screamin in.  So the next day we were called out to put that sweet sweet go juice on her.  So for some reason it just popped in my head that this might be his bird.  So I asked the crew if so and so was on board, at which point, I finally got to his station.  I asked this dude if someone named so-so was on board.  He looked at me as if I had grown a third eye, I said I was his future Sister in law, all of a sudden it dawned on him. 

I've flown in a C-5 whale a few times.  Once we went to Burke Lakefront Airport for a airshow, we had to hop over a freighter sitting near the end of the runway.  After a few memroasble days of someone shooting at the T-Birds, a car running through a fence, and a notification the black panthers were on their way to the show, we left at the end of the show.  We ended up damaging a old style hanger near up as we went into our turn to taxi to the E.O.R.  It had dozens of small square windows on the front and our exhaust threw gravel at the hanger.  On top of that we were being watched by several T.V. stations at the time.  In ddefense, they were warned not to put us near anything breakable because we did not bring a tug with us.

The sets for Star Trek continues are in Kingsland Georgia and were use in the 10 STC episodes. I have never been to those sets.

 

The sets in Ticonderoga NY were used in the New Voyages/Phase 2.

 

I've only been to the Ticonderoga sets.

 

Any TOS fan should try to visit one of them, its an amazing visit.

Funny story, I met my Brother in law on while I was putting fuel on a C-5 and he was a flight engineer. 

My relative was 3rd mate on a container ship and din't quite like it. very fast pace, all of the terminal he visited were far out of cities etc. I enjoyed the bulkers and mid size general cargo shiops. Did a tour on a mid size tanker as well, nah, not my favourite. The best was a small general cargo. The ports were close to the city and we went to places big ships just can't go.

      There is a book, By whom I don't remember, that has quite a few of the large and larger ships in it. You take an unloaded deckhouse Aft Tanker or Container ship and they look a lot alike. Big, unwieldy beasts.

      Relatively easy riding when loaded. Give me a Liquids ship anyday over a " Can " ( Container ship) anyday !

Got to drive an L-39 Albatros for about 15 minutes.  Even got to do some rolls and loops.  That was a fun time.

On the ground? 1967 Pontiac Firebird I owned when I was in the service. 400 cid, Muncie 4 speed and a Dana rear end. I put Hedman headers and a hi flow exhaust and a Holley 4 barrel on it. It looked and sounded great. The idle with the Isky cam was mwahhhhh. The handling at high speeds was a bag of snakes though. How did I survive those years in that car? Young and stupid is my only defense.

In the air? Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It’s pretty cool listening to those GE engines start wailing when the thrust levers advance to take off power. Lots of giddy up and go. Of the two, I’m much safer today

      What is this a competition? Okay, here's a description. Two Wartsilla diesels  driving Azipods, each engine, 7,700hp. 1,345 foot long at the W/L. Approximate ahead full speed 24.5 knots loaded-Load 8.5 Million Barrels of the stuff you eventually burn in your Hot-Cars!

     Cannot use, well couldn't use the P-Canal till they made the wider part! She held Twenty eight crew, Four officers and Sixty two passengers, What was she? One Big Honking hunk of steel called a "Mega" Tanker, Then. ( I think they are even bigger now)

 

 

 

 

 

Pix or it didn't happen . But yay, 1345 ft is a real beast. What was her name?

 

Caught a ride on a Galaxy once.  No cargo but about a dozen guys...had a nice little touch football game to pass the time.

I am very curious now. What kind of qualifications do you need to fly those two very different planes?

 

Just complete Air Force pilot training then the aircraft training program. 

I know it sounds simplistic, but thats about it. 

The C-5 was/is a great machine. The C-23 was fun, but not as well designed.

T-37.  Don't know horsepower.

My first drivable car was a '47 Crosley, with 26 hp.  But the most fun car, fifty years later was a Crosley powered 3/4 midget race car,  I'd estimate hopped engine a 50 hp or so, but with the car weighing less than 700 lb, it was a blast and cornered like a demon.

Don't know whether it had the most HP...but the '71 Hemi 'Cuda had the most rumble!

Certainly one of the best days of my life. I was volunteering almost full time at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo and we were taking the B-17 (Fuddy Duddy) to an airshow in New Jersey. I had my private pilots license, instrument rating, and some time on my multi rating. About half way there, Austin turns to me and asks if I wanted to sit in the co-pilots seat. I actually got to fly her for 15 min or so. So "driving" 4800 hp (4x1200). I doubt I'll be able to top that one in the foreseeable future.
