 Hi Ya'll

I was reading a comment or two about other forums and a phrase came up that really gritted my teeth for me. Since when are other modelers or visitors that see these sites Riff-Raff? I detest the use of denigrating names for folks no matter who they are.

Now that said. There cannot be an equal society if folks continue to think like that. Please folk's, don't label other folks with old titles like that. We come from all walks of life and will continue to do so. I have a Degree and a Post Doc. Does that make me better than YOU? H$&* No!

I agree though , It is a matter of Wording to describe the Folks out there that would bump in just to create problems . There are those kind of folks. I just ignore them!

Mr. Tanker Builder,

The only people that I consider "Riff-Raff" is the shady telemarketers that make threads trying to sell random products. With all of the viruses that could be lurking in their links, it is best to eliminate the problem before it becomes a problem to users of this forum.

Tanker-Builder

There cannot be an equal society if folks continue to think like that.

This part of your post really bothered me but I respect your opinion and I will respectfully state mine.

In all honesty, I think an equal society will never exist. We can't all be equally smart or physically talented, each of us has our own strengths and weaknesses that define who we are.

That is my 2 cents.

I’ll play devils advocate here. Not all in life is sunshine, butterflies, and rainbows. There are people out there who are disruptive, difficult, bad, annoying, foul, evil, etc. Degree of education, wealth, social status, or level of intelligence do not matter. Some are only occasionally, and others are nearly all of their waking hours. It is their behavior that gets them labeled. Considering many terms available to describe such folks, riff raff is pretty tame. PC terminology does not change their actions nor the impact of such actions.

Do education degrees make a person better than another? No. It’s  how someone acts in society with the people around them that demonstrates if they are a better person or not.

”Does not play well with others” is where it all starts...

Seriously, that word offends you?

I read the response that used the term and it's not anything to be offended by.

I second that, Rob.  That post and the use of the term, "riff-raff" was innocuous.  The poster wasn't referring to modelers, he was referring to bots or live hackers, spoofers, etc.

Keep on modeling!

The original poster said something about there being some sort of probationary period (at a forum he frequents) to "screen out the riff-raff."

Never once did he call anyone that word. Never once did he imply someone here was that word.

It was used in the way many folks use the term "unwashed masses".

The snow flakery is getting high.

Likewise. I’m a moderator on a couple of other modeling sites. On one, I am frequently banning ”riff raff”. Which happen to be spammers posting offers of products in those cases. And violations of the terms of site membership. Stuff that has nothing to do with the hobby, or pleasant interaction between the members.

This is getting too heavy for me.....  I had no idea on the probationary period stuff as i dont see that in this post so i cant comment.  I didnt mean that he was calling anyone names - it sounded to me that he was referring to someone else using the term.

Keep on modeling!

All the best,

William

No, MM, to clarify:  this thread was triggered by a comment in another thread here in the Ready Room:

A reply in that thread contains this sentence, "You have to be a member for a set period of time or minimum number of posts...I forget which...but that's just to screen out the riff-raff."

Exactly. You don’t want your site vulnerable to new members whose apparent purpose is solely to post some sort of rant, start flame wars among the members, or fill your forums full of ads for whatever product. Those folks or bots are indeed riff raff. Not the casual visitor who stumbles upon your site by a web search.

I'm confused. My understanding is that Riff Raff is a rapper from Texas. Does he also build models?

Just trying to lighten up the conversation.

Attempts to micromanage the English language so as to "not offend anyone" are themselves offensive to me.  This assumes that human beings are incapable of handling any kind of perceived slight, and in fact conditions the "aggrieved" to in fact seek out further otherwise innocuous statements, symbols, or objects, to get aggrieved about and thereby exert control over someone else.

But, it's FSM's forums and if they want to ban the the otherwise innocent term "riff raff" than, then that's their choice.  I haven't used the phrase in years, but with these things, one thing leads to another, then another, then another, and next thing you know the only thing we will be allowed to post are car models that are painted institutional gray. (that's sarcasm, please auto builders, don't get bent out of shape!)  Big Smile

Just my 2 cents and I don't claim any authority over another.  I would just advise to be careful what you wish for.

I'll freely fess up...it was my phrase...and it would never have occurred to me that it would be interpereted in any 'socio-economic' sense.

In the Midwest that I was raised in, it was a more or less innocuous term -- like "pinhead," which is what I almost used -- with no deeper shade of meaning intended or implied.

Nonetheless to any and all who took offense, I am happy to apologize. No offense meant.

As my father used to say...if you're wondering whether to be offended or not, don't be: if I'm looking to offend you...I'm fully capable of leaving no doubt about the matter. Wink

Cheers

GregBale>  At least you didn't refer to them as "rapscallions" or "ne'er-do-wells".  We must maintain at least a semblance of decorum here at FSM!  Big Smile

I grew up in a predominantly Polish neighbirhood in Chicago in the 1950's. The vast majority of the people were third and fourth generation Polish Americans, so very few people spoke Polish, my family did not.

It was common to say "There goes the neighboorhood, here comes the riff raft", whenever a family of a different nationality moved in. Then everyone would laugh and the new family would be welcomed with open arms. This was not ment as a derogatory term. It was just a term that everyone in Chicago used.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

I'll keep this short and move along.  In my time I have been called more names than I can remember, growing up and them during the military in the 70s, especially as a A.F. cop.  As I got older it was easier to just let the words go by and move on.  It wasn't always easy when I was young but I moved on eventually and later it bacame easier.

That's what I am going ot do now.  Follow the advice of the Storm Troopers from star wars and move along.

good night
