Not a 'model' morning
Posted by HooYah Deep Sea on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 10:22 AM

Being semi-retired, my day does not start overly early. So, at about 0700 I get up to let the dogs out  for their business, and throw down some food for the cats, mainly to shut them up so I can, maybe, get just a little more sleep. By 0730, the dogs are are back in, and I'm up for the day.

This morning was not that 'model' morning. The dogs went out and cats fed on schedule, but then the dogs started barking a bit more than usual. I called them in and one came; the other didn't show up. I walked through the house looking out the windows and tried to locate the errant dog, 'when what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a palamino horse and some others quite near'. Damn, the ponies are out!

I do have a perimeter fence, so they are still relatively contained, but I really did not want to get dressed and go herd horses around the property first thing this morning.

Fortunately, they returned to their corral without much hassle or damage .  .  . so now I'll go make coffee. I'm up for the day. Yee Haa.

I had a lady friend who had cows on her farm. Woke up in the middle of the night, cow was staring in the window at us. Of course the other 30-40 were out of the barn as well.

Yeah, the prior owner of this property woke up one morning to find a very large bull in the yard. Just after that was when the perimeter fence went up.

I could take up a whole day recalling stories of cattle getting out. My uncle has close to 1,000 dairy cows so it quite common to see some of them roaming the barnyard every few days.

Cattle are the darndest animals, I have seen them undo gate chains and even turn on water spickets with their tongue! The worst time of year for jailbreaks is the spring, something about that time of year makes them go nuts.

Around 1980 we had an officer in our squad named Roy Dawson that was a real cowboy from Montana. The area we patrolled back then had several horse and cow farms. Most every Sunday the cows got loose and wondered the then country area, now it’s full of businesses in an area presently called City of Doral near Miami. So most Sunday mornings we got the “loose cow” call and we had to round them up till the owner arrived to take them back to his farm. Roy always took over the call if another car got it so he was the master of the round up. I recall Roy standing on the hood of the patrol car roping one of the cows. The Miami Herald just hapenned to snap a picture that appeared in the paper.

10-4, one of my sons is a Sheriff's Deputy in central California. As such, he has a lot of rural farm and ranch areas to cover. He told me that he needs to buff up on his roping again, 'just in case'.

He is up in Solano County. He used to be with Oakland PD. We are both happier that he's out of the city.

My daughter lives in Oakland and loves it. But of course that's because of folks like him, and her experience would be quite different.

Thank you Bill. And yes, her experience might be different. Some parts of Oakland are nice, and some, not so nice. The big problem for both is the politics. Civilian oversight groups run the police, most with zero understanding of what it's like to be a cop in a place like that. Like I said, I, as a father, am really glad he's out of there.

Actually, the worst of the 'escape artists' are goats, which I have none, yet. My wife wants one, mostly as a companion to the horses, but she also thinks they're cute.

But, as a friend of mine put it; "if your fence won't hold water, it won't hold goats."

That's a great line.

Thats true, our neighbor had goats, therefore we "had" goats.

SO, yesterday I did a little dove hunting and after breasting out the birds, I put the carcasses in the trash and bagged it all up. Good to go.

This morning I find one of the cats carrying a wing through the house .  .  . Oh Crap! I'd thought that the scented trash bags would hide any smells; NO SUCH LUCK!!!

Now I've triple bagged it all in heavy seed bags. If the beasties get into that I'm going to get hostile.

I’ve had a neighbor’s cow get out and try to push my vehicle for whatever reason. There are a couple ranchers around me so seeing cattle that escaped is not too uncommon. There are a few bulls around that I wouldn’t fancy meeting on foot if they got out. Also have had the odd horse or donkey show up as well.

Other than that I’ve had Javelina (wild pigs) make a mess of my yard and try to get into any trash, they scare off pretty easy.

Javelina are fun to hunt; what part of AZ are you in? I have family in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas.

About twenty minutes west of Tucson. As far as I know in Arizona you can’t hunt Javelina since they are protected. A lot of neighbors around me have problems with them along with coyotes and big cats. Of course most of them have livestock and I don’t so I’m left alone usually.
