How the local skate park helped my modelling
Posted by Dodgy on Sunday, August 23, 2020 12:34 AM

Nearly 4 weeks ago two of our grandchildren came to stay with us for a few days, an 11 yo boy and a 9 and1/2 yo girl. The 9 and1/2 is very important as she reminds me all the time that she is nearly 10. Anyway, both had scooters and skateboards, so I took them to the local skatepark. The 11yo has no fear and was soon jumping and speeding all over the place. The 9 and a 1/2 yo was not so confident and was proceeding very carefully. I asked the 11 yo to show his sister a couple of low key tricks, to which he readily agreed, but she was still very shy and unsure. Anyway, in steps 63 yo grandad and ofers to try the trick first to boost her confidence and then she can have a go. Right. Wrong. 30 seconds later I'm lying in the bottom of the skate park with two breaks in my left ankle, a break in the tibia just below the left knee, the cartlidge, (or whatever it is), torn from the knee cap and the inside of the knee cap looking like a tossed salad.

So now I am 3 weeks into not being able to put any weight on my left leg and some months from being able to use the left knee. How did it help my modelling? My wonderful wife and a good mate have set me up at the dining room table and I have gone back to braile scale armour to pass the next few weeks. As I have been out of the hobby for a while, its a great way to rediscover some old skills. Mind you, old Airfix kits are a heck of a reintroduction. Is there anywhere on them that does not have sink holes??????

Moral of the story. My 9 and a 1/2 yo grandaughter is a hell of a lot smarter than her 63 yo grandfather!

I tore up a knee almost as bad.  Just wait till rehab time chained into the resistance torture fixture.  Will be after the bones heal.

I wish you a full recovery.  Keep a positive mindset and you'll get there.

Hopefully the kids will grow out of it.

As my wife would say to her 70 year old husband, "what the h*ll were you thinking"!

I'm very sorry to hear that story. I've made it a point to stay away from the Hospital just now.

My wife is getting a new knee on 9/4, so we are getting tested next week and then quarantine until after the operation.

True Tojo72, but its winter here and we are in lockdown, so if it was going to happen at least my timing was good. And believe me, I'm making the most of the modelling time.

Roger that Ed. My wife did say something to that effect, after she stopped laughing! Whilst she and my mates were all concerned, it did not stop them laughing themselves silly and I have since been the but of many jokes. Can't blame them, it was a pretty silly thing to do. Would you believe the two blokes administering the anesthetic were named Tom and Jerry!

Its all good Bill. I put the story up to give folks a laugh. I'm in great spirits and being well cared for by my wonderful wife. Besides, it is what it is and I can't change it. Good luck to you and your wife. I hope all goes well for her.

Dodgy
The 9 and1/2 is very important as she reminds me all the time that she is nearly 10.

That made me smile.

Sorry you had such a rude return to the hobby, but welcome back. Sounds like your spouse is a keeper. Speedy recovery to you.

Tough way to get back to the hobby.  Get better.  Keep this in mind.  My favorite things in life are sex, eating good food, watching sports, drinking beer, cigars, and modeling.  I don’t have to stand up for any of them.

cheers

Well, that's not the most ideal way to get bench time for sure, but thank goodness you didnt break anything else like a femur!

Almost sounds like a "Hold my beer and watch this" story. Also reminds me of a liberty call in Hong Kong with a bunch of you Aussies .  .  . and a good time was had by all.

If it were me, I'd pick up a couple of cases of XXXX and relax!

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"

Sounds to me like you ignored that little voice that told you don't do this, right before you did it and broke yourself. Prayers for a fast healing.

I have found that as I age my goal is to not do things that might break something because things break much easier now and take longer to recover from. I prefer to age gracefully not painfully. I've had a hernia surgery and 5 broken ribs over the last 4 years and that's enough for me. Little voice talks, I listen.
