I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, Patrick.  We have always had rescue cats and I can empathize with your loss.  Several years ago we said goodbye to our oldest (kidney failure, as well) and it was devastating, he'd been such a sweetheart and important part of everyone's lives.  He died right before Halloween, so every year the kids put up an ofrenda with his photo and some other memories.  A few months later, we wound up adopting a skittish orange boy from a local rescue that was so scared and nervous, they waived all fees and gave him to us just so he had a quiet home.  He seems to have settled into almost the same personality!

I'm sure you and Karon and Ellie remember Bert fondly and know he had the best second chance any cat could ever have, and was grateful to you all for it.  I'm sure he knew how well loved he was.

Best regards,

daniel

You want to talk about plump .  .  . This is George; my wife had him for about nine years, and he was a bit of a grazer.

WOW !!! Simon is just about 20lb and he waddles a bit but sheesh. We had another 20lb cat ( Theo) but he was tall and all muscle.

At the shelter, for some reason this cat likes me. I'll take it home for my wife.

The following morning: Well, I was going to shave; I guess I'll use the other bathroom.

That cat looks just like our Schuster, one of two ( brothers) we got from a rescue . His brother couldn't be more opposite, he looks like a plump black bear. But they are litter buddies, my wife came home with them 5 years ago after we had three of our long term cats put down in the prior year or so. So now we are down to these two. Simon and Schuster lol. Simon and Schuster were not the rescue, their mom cat was the rescue.

Three of our six horses, both of our dogs and all four of our cats (and the several before them) are rescues. There are not many better feelings to be had in this world than rescuing and animal and watching them develop back to being friendly healthy little friends.

And though they keep us awake, and break our models, and have occasional accidents in the house, we can't really get the motivation up enough to be angry with them long term. For us, a short 'time out' in the garage, (where there is food and water and a safe place to curl up) is about the extent of it.

Note: I'm typing this with one hand, as one of my cats has commandeered my other arm.

Sorry for your loss Patrick. All of our pets have been either rescues or strays. We will have a lot of little friends waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. It's going to be a pretty big party.

All of my cats have been throwaway “walk-ins”, except for one, which was a colony cat that was put up for adoption by the local animal shelter.  I think cat owners (staff, actually) have some kind of lighthouse beacon that only cats can see.

I lost my cat of 16 years this spring to kidney failure, but I need some time before the lighthouse is switched back on.

But then again, we don’t control the switch, so who knows...

Sorry about your loss, Patrick.  I definitely know that feeling of loss and how it affects your other animals as well.  Had a rescue cat that was a bobcat hybrid for 12 of his 17 years.  Wonderful animal...a gentle giant.  He and my currently 20 year old rescue female iguana were best friends and she definitely felt his passing.  I have another rescue cat now, but the friendship between him and my iguana isn't as strong.  Maybe they'll grow on each other.

To all that responded, thank you for the messages of condolence and sympathy. This morning was a bit rough to get through, Karon and I were accepting of the fact that Bert's life was over, and the reason for it. But poor Ellie is beside herself, still looking all around for Bert.

The look in her eyes is both questioning and hurtful, that is the most troubling thing for us. We were playing fetch earlier, every couple of tosses she would stop on the return, to look around the yard for her missing buddy. We did a complete cleaning of their bed area, to try removing the familiar smells that she knows. The less to remind her, will hopefully make this transition easier for her.

Good for all of you that have rescued pets, you do recognize how some of us feel about the care of a pet that needed help. Bert showed us every day how much he loved being here, and that alone made it just the best experience for us.

Thanks again, it's much appreciated.

Tosh!

It sure is good to hear from you and the Fam. How're doing? My rescue cat is now 12. Still bossy and one of the best comfort friends I had during my heart specific problems. She sleeps tucked in right next to my chest. Yes, Under the covers!

Animals know who love them. And you may think I'm nuts but have a talk with your dog, animals often understand more than you think they do. It's amazing sometimes. I'm serious.

God bless you both and your dog too.

Patrick, your post is both heart-warming and heart-breaking.  You and family gave Bert a great, loving life for him to enjoy.

We too have had and still have a number of rescue animals, presently five cats and one dog.  It was a privilege to provide them with enough love and attention to compensate them for the damage done to them.  Rescue animals seem always to respond with affection and friendship, when they are given love and care.

I hope you will find healing of the heart in the days ahead, and take great satisfaction in your friendship with Bert, and the happy life you provided for him.

Sorry about Bert, Patrick.

As you know, you changed his life, who knows what it was like up to point you and Karon rescued him. Sounds like not a life before you guys came into the picture.

Nice thing you did and a nice message promoting pet rescues. I do remember when you adopted the cat, absolutely. Hard to believe it's been two years.

Our newest animal child is "Misty". We rescued her two years ago. She was a breeding female, a yellow Lab with double champion papers up the tailpipe.

$ 4000 puppies.

Last pregnancy was a c section so the breeders threw her away to Monterey Bay Lab Rescue.

6 years old, never house trained. Didn't know what a toy was. Never slept on a dog bed. Chain link fences set her back for a week.

Two years now. Loving dog, always wins the game on TV challenge. i.e. can you watch your game longer than I can stand you petting me?

Patrick you and your family have my sincere sympathy. It was a wonderful thing that you did and Bert knew what that was. I cannot abide cruelty to animals. Until recently we had a greyhound. When she was finished racing the owner gave her to a family who badly mistreated her. When we found her she was literally skin and bones and missing lots of bark. (Sorry, Aussie slang for skin). Because she kept running away the original owner asked us if we would take her, which we gladly did. She never ran away again and I would let her run on the beach every day. She was beautiful, gentle and loving, but traumatised. In time I think we got her past that, but then one day she was diagnosed with bone cancer and in the end we had to put her to sleep. That was two years ago and I cried like a baby. I still tear up now just thinking of her.

It was a wonderful thing you did and I agree with Bill. Bert will be waiting for you.

I have heard that with dogs it is good if they can sniff the body of a deceased friend. Apparently they can recognize death. Of course not possible in this case.

But wow, 25 years! That is so great. I'm glad you had your time with him.

I type on a tablet. Please excuse the terseness and the autocorrect. Not to mention the erors.

This story tells us all that there's still true people out there that will sacrifice anything for their fellow man and woman or pet in this case!  Mrs. Toshi and I kept up to 3 rescued cats in our home.  Now we only have 1 left.  Her name is nautghy kitty.  But she has a heart that is so bright that it literally glows at night!

What a wonderful gift you gave him- a second chance at life. And he returned the favor.

Well, he's waiting for you across the Rainbow Bridge, where he can chase mice and fall asleep in front of the TV with you.

Bert the cat.
Posted by patrick206 on Thursday, September 3, 2020 8:15 PM

As some of you may recall, we rescued an old cat 2 years and 8 months ago. He endured a history of abuse and neglect for several years, following the death of his owner's wife. Her husband left him to fend mostly for himself, more often then not his food and water bowls were empty. He had several broken bones and a back injury, reportedly because of neighborhood kids that considered kicking him a fun activity.

His owners daughter told us he was 23 years old, a flame point siamese. He lived two doors from us, we saw him as we passed by on our daily walks, he always greeted us and loved to be petted and talked to.

My wife started checking on him daily, to ensure he had food and water. One day he walked to our place, yowling, pawing at his jaw and clearly in severe pain. Off to the emergency pet clinic, the poor guy had four rotten teeth and a severe infection in his jaw. Surgery and an extended clinic stay had him better, an $1800 bill and several days later we took him home to our house, we now had a cat.

We told his owner he wouldn't be coming back, he felt at home with us immediately. Our black lab, Ellie, was used to seeing him daily on our walks, so she also made him feel welcome.

Bert had been having some discomfort and sand box issues since Tuesday evening, I stayed up until 0430 this morning with him and it was clear he was in distress, looking quite distant and sort of lost. We took him to the vet early this morning, the diagnosis was kidney failure and at 25 years old there was no hope of any corrective action.

So Bert was put to sleep, my wife was holding him on her lap. He looked entirely peaceful, passing away in probably less than one minute. Even the vet got a bit teary, knowing Bert had a great two years of quality life, after so much neglect before he became ours.  He will be cremated, joining all of all of our other pets that are still with us in their urns.

This evening we feel sadness, but relieved that Bert will not be suffering with an unfixable illness. Ellie, our black lab, keeps looking for Bert and has a somewhat panicked look in her eyes, it will be a while before she realizes he just won't be here. It makes us sad that she can't know the reason, I wish she could understand that Bert needed this relief, it was his time. The two of them had been so close, always together.

I write this not intended to be a downer, rather to say if anyone has the desire and opportunity to rescue an animal, it can be among the best experiences one can enjoy. We were so pleased and happy to have Bert, he gave every bit the same love and affection for us, that we wanted to give him. We were so grateful to have him as a member of our family. Aloha, Bert.

Best to all.

Karon, Patrick and Ellie
