Forums - View Recent Discussions - methodology
Posted by Mrchntmarine on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 4:59 PM

So, maybe its just me and im not using the site correctly.  But this is driving me nuts.  A lot I use the site's Recent Discussions heading.  My only gripe is that when i hit a thread to view, it of course brings me to the thread and its appropriate forum location.  When im done reading, one cannot easily get back to the location one came from in the Recent Discussions area as youve been redirected to the thread section of the article that was read.  So to aviod having to backtrack to the recent discussion's 1st page, then tab back to lets say, the 5th page if thats where one left off, i now when i see an article i want to read, right click and pick "open in new window" to read said article.  When im done i just close the window and im still right where i left off....

Keep on modeling!

All the best,

William

Recent Discussions is how I navigate here too.

I open pretty much everything in a new tab, so you can just close the tab and you're back wherever you started from in the Recent Discussions contents.

Hey Greg - yep, i use to also, but have gotten ou of the habit for some reason....  Gues id end up w/ a bunck open and got lost...  HaHa.  But this is what i was talking about - if i had picked the below thread from the 5th or so page of recents, id end up in Filtering and Painting.  Then id have to click on Forums to get back and then click recents and then remember the page i was on!  Windows or Tabs is much easier.  Im slow!

Keep on modeling!

All the best,

William

My bookmark for the forum is the Recent Discussions page; it's all I ever see, unless I'm getting ready to start a new thread myself.

Ditto on opening everything in separate tabs. I'm a dedicated Firefox user on both phone and PC. The 'separate tabs' feature is why I first went with them, way back when.

What I've found is when you are done in any particular thread, drop down to the bottom of the page, hit the Forums tab, and you are back in the main page. then go on from there as you wish. It's the easiest and clearest way of going through the site.

I don't use the View Recent Discussions feature.

I just navigate to the main forum index page:  http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/f/default.aspx

and then I scroll down the list of topics and look for things that catch my interest.

For threads I've already commented in, I use the Your Discussions feature.

I also navigate by using the bread crumb trail at the top of any open thread (boxed in red in the screenshot below):

I use that to go back to the subforum or to the index page itself.

There's no right or wrong way, of course, only the way that you like best.

I have been using this forum for years, and I have never even clicked the big blue button for recent topics...or the Your Discussions link.  Wonder what other fancy features I have been missing!

My bookmark to the site is the "Your Discussions" link below my name and profile information.

Then I will tap one of the armor posts from my feed. Then rinse and repeat with General Discussion, which often leads me to the ready room. At times, I wish this subforum did show for me.
