Hi;
You probably fall asleep befor you finish this paragraph. You know I still have my very first issue of Scale Auto, same goes for Fine Scale. Will I part with either? No way Jose'! I am an older modeler who has modeled in media most don't even get near. That's alright, I don't take a lot of pictures either. Never did.
Well, I thought about this and said, "Why?" I prefer to spend my time exercising my brain creating details for my Scratch - Built Ships and Card models. Do I not want to brag? No! I just never think about it till the last ,Oops, Model's done! Now, here were two mags that took and take us to new heights of modeling.
Scale Auto broke me out of my lethargy toward seriously bent customs. Based on what I saw within those wonderful , colorful pages I even went so far as to creat a full custom 49 Merc that bears little resemblance to the original auto. It has a Rolls style grille and front fenders that sweep back to transplanted 51 chevy rear fender contours with a top that resembles a 54 Plymouth ending with a Hood and Trunk that reflect the contours of a 48 Buick. That's a mess aint it?
Guess what ? After priming she didn't look all that weird after all. Now FSM has many neat projects. They got me to fiddling with alternate materials for Super Detailing the REVELL U.S.S.Randall. So I got rails and ladders etc.from three sizes of model Rail-Road related parts. She looks like a hodge podge of stuff that in the end came together to look like I spent more on A.M.stuff than the model was worth!
This is what a Scale Model magazine is supposed to do. I do hope that FSM can pull off the idea of having cars on here regularly. Remember there's a lot of interest and a Whole LOT of Categories there! I mean, You have Rat Rods,,Customs, LowRiders, Match racers, Drifters, ProStock, Drags etc. Can they pull it off? I sure hope so. Why? Well the title says it all Fine Scale Modeling. It doesn't say Fine Scale Ship Modeling, Well, you get the picture!
Over the years I have lost, either due to cost or demise Seven Magazines devoted to ship modeling. Why? Most, had three quarters of the Mag either covering All Sail in Wood and Plastic or R.C. I don't, in my later years, have the room for anything larger than a 1/350 Sailing Ship! Modern ships can be put two to a model cars case if they are 1/350 or 1/700 ! or anything in between. I have Scale Model Truck cases full of cruisers and battleships in 1/400 and smaller. I have also turned some of the kit trailers in 1/25 into Showcases for my smaller ships , either Paper or Plastic!
What does this have to do with either Mag? They taught me to think out of the Box!
Yes, I have done this proffessionally! But they gave me deep down Inspiration. The Modelers thar never post pictures ( Like Me) got me going in the Write ins and Mail. This is what Magazines are for. Not just interesting things on the Coffee Table! They glorify our hobby. I hope we will support FSM's vision and they ours!
