I Wonder
Posted by Tanker-Builder on Saturday, December 5, 2020 9:40 AM

Silly, isn't it?

Wondering where all those models have gone? Thousands and thousands of them. Some in smaller runs than others. Collectors? sure, for some. But what about the rest? I wonder about that even today.

Models that hit the market in the Sixties ( late) and Seventies. Where'd they go? I mean, c'mon, surely they All didn't wind up in landfills? There were many, many Models of limited interest sure. But tha main line ones is what I am thinking about

For instance. Recently I acquired the " Hydro-Vee" Boat model. Whatta rip-off that is. Definitely a large scale model intended to be used in the pool. But the Lindberg Sport Fisherman is unobtainium in status. The same for Aurora's Wheeler Cruiser model. Two of the Best civilian boats alongside, the Lindberg Chris -Craft Constellation.

Sure, the old and not to well molded Chris-Craft Tri-Cabin motoryacht by Revell pops up sometimes. Either in stock form or as a " Sport Fisherman" Which it was NEVER designed to be. The Chris-craft 36' day cruiser by Lindberg pops up too. There had to be more of those subjects made than are out there. Where are they?

The same goes for Revell's N.S.Savannah Nuclear Cruise and Freight liner. Or the Moore-Mcormack liner the Brasil/Argentina! ( Yes, the last has been released under both names) And Revell's original Oriana Kit

Then there's the Monogram boat series. The R.A.G boat, The Swift Boat and the Vietnamese Patrol Junk and the U.D.T. boat. Where's they disappear too? Collectors again? Can't account for all of them. I wonder how many are hidden in storage facilities all over the country? Or how many are in those second hand stores owned by folks that make a business of re-selling the contents of those units?

So that leaves even Estate Sales. I went to one that was the estate of a known Model builder in this area. NOT ONE model was evident! Plus, even the person who inventoried the estate found not even an X-Acto knife. Funny That! I remember this person talking about recently, Before he passed, Of obtaining the Revell " Holy Grail" kit of the  General Electric, or is it Westinghouse? Nuclear reactor.

Is there a secret dimension they are transported to when people lose interest supposedly, in them? I wonder?

My 'wonder where they went' group was the Monogram 1/48 aircraft with all the moving parts; retractable gear, folding wings, etc. Some may still be around, I guess I just haven't looked, but I loved that series when I was young.

Probably rotting in people's stashes.

I've got a couple. The "Phantom' Mustang comes to mind.

I recently built the old Revell "Midway", that goes back to the mid fifties.

The Revell Treasury Class Campbell is in there somewhere.

The Revell Burton Island too. I think I have a PE set that covers both of the above.

Revell reissued the U.D.T. boat again a few years back, I picked it up to try it out again after my childhood attempt was lost to the ages.

You likely answered your own question though of where most kits ended up though, the landfill.  I don't have a single finished kit left that was completed before the age of 23.  As time went by, pieces were broken of while being dusted by others or were crushed while in storage and it wasn't worthwhile to salvage.

Bill, i've got about 5 of Revell's Yorktown class carriers with 1 done as the Hornet over 40 yrs ago but without the Mitchells which i got later which is 1 of the other 4 kits. the other 4 kits will do the Yorktown & Enterprise with the remaining 2 to be kitbashed into the Ranger & Wasp. i've got 4 of Revell's Treasury Class cutters with 1 i built about 45yrs, the other 3 with 1 to be built as the Taney with the floatplane & 2 5" 51cal guns, the 2nd as the 4 5"38cal command ship & the last in it's present configuration. i have 3 of the Burton Island's with 1 of them to be built as CCGS Labrador as i'm Canadian.

Robert, i still have a number of Airfix British cruisers that i built almost 50yrs ago plus other ships that survived about a dozen moves due to family splitup & work.

HooYah;

I remember all of those. and I still have some unbuilt from a box full of Monogram stuff I did buy at a Flea market. As the time goes by they will get rarer.

Doc,

The rest of those old models you folks are talking about.... I think I have a few.

Some PT boats from my attic.  Built back in the 60's.

( And yeah, some with "battle damage"...)

 Nino.

There is a deep spot in a stream near Paoli, Pennsylvania ( about 20 miles west of Philadelphia), that is the model equivalent to 'Iron Bottom Sound'. Littering the depths (all of about six feet) are the earthly remains of many plastic warships, having succumbed to the onslaught of BB guns and firecrackers and the occasional aerial bomb (taconite pellets, dropped from the railroad overpass).

I left that area back in '68, never to return. I have no idea what may remain.

I have a Robert E Lee sidewheeler by Revell, from the early 70's, that is not built.  Also, I have a 1/48 Monogram B25H, unbuilt, from the same period.  They are among the many kits I have to get rid of, due to moving.  Still have a bunch of models I built in the early 60's.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

Most of them, especially the Monogram with all them working parts, are rubble. We played with them in battle.  Or we shot the model ships with BB guns or firecrackers etc.  I did not stop blowing plastic models apart until 1970, when I started college.  Then models became "keepers".  Then they had to deal with other damage or they became parts donors.
