GB Badges Should be What Size?
Posted by 68GT on Saturday, November 29, 2014 10:55 AM
I was going to help out and make some GB badges but wasn't sure how small they should be resized to. Any thoughts?

I prefer to have the badges on the larger size and then each person can resize to their wish. I normally go for about 400 pixels.

Which GB's are you planning on making them for. I did do one for aj's dawn of the jet age GB, but I am not sure what he has decided on that one.

He sent me a pic that he asked if I could work with. This is what I came up with.

But I know he has been pretty busy.

Why do they need to be controlled ? To each his own.I know of no rules except for offensive material, so I say have at it.

I did see that ad but didn't realize that it was turned into a badge.

Some forums have size limit on signatures and banners so I just assumed there was one here.

Ye, he just asked me to trim the bottom off.

There is a limit on characters but not the actual size. I normally use small GB badges all put into one image. Not sure if that remark is aimed at my current sig, but that's just a bit of fun.

SMALL, please. It's really annoying to see some of the posters that have these massive signature areas and photos up. Seriously, they need to have some limits imposed on the size.

When someones signature is bigger than the ads on the site, and takes up 10X the space of whatever they posted, it is annoying. I'm glad you're into your GB. Please stop blasting me with an ad for it that takes up the space two other posts could.

Nice work on those badges guys!   They look awesome!!!

As far as size,  I dunno.  I like the fact you can put many badges together.  I try to make them small as possible but still legible in the signature.  Everyone should be able to display these for sure though!  They are kinda like badges of prestige.

Sorry James, I didn't realise it was such a chore to spend the fraction of a second it takes to scroll past a large sig. But if its really that annoying, I will shrink it for you.

i generally create mine large but scale it down to rough 2.5" for final posting. i sometimes have to scale it a bit to fit in my GB badge graphics and i know some folks don't do graphics so i try to make it usable straight up.

in a similar vane i usually make photos no bigger than 640 by 480.

i think the recruiting posters are interesting. as i am into the old style travel posters i may have to create one for my next GB.

I didn't think this was going to open up a sore subject with some people.  Thanks to those who have shed some light and helped me on this one.

those are nice. i usually post a large one and a small 2.5" one on my roster page so folks who don't want to manipulate the size can just grab it (wow talk about double entendres). is this just a US build or all countries? i do like how some GB hosts have different badges for country (axis/allied) or type (land/sea/air)

To tell you the truth I kinda enjoy looking at people's badges.  Seeing what they have done.  I really hope nobody puts up too big of fit.  It would suck to get rid of them or shirk them where you cant read them.  Just my 2 cents.

I really like them. I find it interesting to look at them all and wonder what the build was like, or remember who was in one with me.

If I remember right, I think the big issue was with the time it took to download the page with all the images on it, back in the day with dial up. BTW, Bish, I love the recruiting poster!

If I could provide a counter-opinion without stepping on people's feelings or sounding like a grump...Whistling And I admit that it's well-known that I don't do or really endorse Group Builds because they take traffic and work away from the main forum genres, but this comment has nothing to do with that aspect of things.

If you've participated in a GB, god for you for completing it and getting your badge. I do know that a lot of guys sign up and then never finish, However, I think I can probably speak for a part of the community here who doesn't know or care about what your badge looks like or means. I'm not saying that in an unpleasant or snarky way; it's just fact. When I see a signature with a ton of badges in it, it just looks messy to me. That's not saying "{bleep} you and your %$#%! badges!", that's just saying that these icons mean nothing to me or other who aren't involved in them.

Similarly, if you have participated in the build, than you know what the badge looks like and probably don't need to "read" it or marvel at its artistry at two to four inches square, right?. Wink I mean, you CAN shrink the badge in your signature, and still have it "saved" somewhere else, like in Photobucket o something, can't you? I dunno. Pardon my ignorance, but I'm trying to be fair in opinion.

In any case, yes, it only takes a second to scroll past it. And I can't exactly explain why, but it IS annoying to constantly see the same booming pile of graphics pop up as you read down the page. I can't explain it. I just know that for some people, it is. Tongue Tied

There is one problem with your comment though....  "these icons mean nothing to me"   It does mean a lot to other people.

So why should it bother others that some people enjoy the GBs and the things that come along with it?  Im not saying you are, and I don't mean to sound harsh but I see it as kinda selfish if people want to take that fun and enjoyment from people just because they think it looks messy.

Cody, no one, not even me is saying "take away the badges". Many forums limit their "signature" areas and for good reason. It's just that a lot of huge badges take up a whole lot of space, and it's not unreasonable to limit them. And you forget, too, that I personally have no power to do anything about it. That's just my opinion which I stated. And you can't be "wrong" with an opinion.

Man you aint kiddin' there. Model Car Magazine limits you to  one, and one ONLY. I personally like the badges but as you said, it's my opinion.

The Doog- Agreed, an opinion cant be wrong, you said yours and I gave you mine.  No hard feelings man! Yes  Just wanted to point out that GBs are a big source of community and fun.  Gets you making things you never thought of.  Badges just came along with GBs.  A limit really isn't a bad idea if it gets way over the top.  I haven't seen any that are too crazy before.  I guess you could always make a scrolling .gif file too if you collected too many to display.

If the forums had limits or signatures could be shut off altogether, it would be different. But regardless of whether it's in the GB forum or not, I don't like being subjected to the eye sores detailing the last 19 group builds you feel the need to tell me you've participated in when I click on a thread that is completely unrelated to GBs. I'm glad you get something out of it. I don't, and that opinion is just as valid. I don't have a way to shut them off, and ''ignore' it when every other comment in a thread has a signature 8X the size of the FSM subscribes ads everyone hates so much?

Well, there is already a limit on the number of characters allowed din a sig, I assume this saves bandwidth or what ever its called. But its quite clear a large number of regular users like to have badges and images in their sig. Your first post stated that Sig's have gotten out of control again. But I don't recall this being an issue in the last 3 years. You have chosen not to display your GB badge and that's your choice completely. For many it adds a nice bit of colour. As for my Star Wars poster, that's only meant as a little bit of fun and to add a touch of humour and is only meant to be temporary.

You know I had posted something here earlier and decided to take it off because it was leaning towards something that I strive not to be any more. I try to stay away from opinion based threads and bow out when threads turn out like this because this is what always and I mean ALWAYS happens. Opinions are thrown out there and that's ok...........until stronger feelings are thrown out there with those opinions. Where do we go from there? I came here to have a good time and that's what I'm going to do.

My comment I had originally made would have done nothing but fuel the fire and offend so with that I just retracted it and I'll retreat from this thread and from now on just stick to voicing my opinion once in a thread like this. For a moment I caught myself getting angry this morning and got away from the fun aspect of this forum. I'm glad it and you all are  here. Have a good day guys, Joe
