painting plastic models, advice needed
Posted by gregthec on Monday, October 12, 2015 4:36 PM

Hi Folks,

I'm new to this forum.  Also new to model kits although I built them when I was a kid.

To relive old memories, I just purchased an Ed "Big Daddy" Roth kit, specifically "Mothers Worry" (see attached).  I can't find a list of suggested colors and I have some questions about painting models in general.  Here they go:

  1. Is enamel the way to go compared to acrylic?
  2. Is Testors still the best choice?
  3. Where's a good resource for selecting paint?  Even the Testors site is tricky in that it's hard to view swatches of color.  Ideally, a paint set with a good mix of colors is what I want but they seem to be car specific or aircraft, etc.
  4. Do you know of paint set that has a mix suitable for painting cars and monsters :-)
  5. I would prefer to walk into a store and select from a bunch of bottles on display but can't find any in the Philly area.  Are there hobby shops anymore?  How about a Walmart or a Michaels?

That's all for now. Thanks so much in advance!

Those are a number of pretty specific questions.  I'd advise asking this in the Painting and Airbrushing forum.  There are frequent discussions there on the best sites for color number conversions between brands, etc.

I personally like Testors enamels, but there are folks who do not like odor, or who live in small apartment and family does not like odor, one of the big reasons acrylics are so popular.

Unless or until you get an airbrush and learn how to use it, you'll need to rely on spray cans for painting cars. That somewhat limits your choices to enamels or lacquers.

take a look at the spray cans at the hardware store. Those are my picks for flat or gloss black or white, gloss red yellow and blue.

Gray primer, and I like to use rust oleum red on the bottom of my ships.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Use both. One model w/ enamels and the next model w/ acrylics .They both are good.Do not limit yourself.Be flexible and enjoy the art of painting and building.

Hi All,

Well, after building my first model since I was a kid (with all your help!), I figured I should post the results:

Mother's Worry

The rest are here: https://goo.gl/photos/VbNhdZZfQfS6cWNY7

Learned a few things along the way including:

  • When to thin paints
  • Painting methods
  • Dealing with fumes
  • Do a better job trimming flash
  • Acrylics vs oil based paint

Anywhoo, 'twas a fine project.  Maybe something more complex next time.  Thanks again for the help folks.

You did very well! Nice color choices. I remember these kits when I was a kid, so it brought back memories to see the results of your build. Good work.
