What constitutes a disability when building models . ?
Posted by Tanker - Builder on Friday, July 29, 2016 11:38 AM

Touchy subject this ;

 I am gonna go for it anyway .

     If you're legally blind and build models , If you are Autistic and build models , If you are a sufferer of many physical problems and the body don't work right and you build models . No matter what in the list . Can you envision your favorite and even have someone build it while you guide them . Does that mean you are disabled . Heck No ! ! !

      I have known folks who lived in Stryker beds till they passed and still got a model finished .If you are conscious and can again " Envision " then you are not disabled .Gosh , I hate that word . Dis-abled means just exactly that Unable to perform the task set before you .If you can engage in this hobby in any way , you are NOT , Dis-Abled ! Take it from someone who's been there . I beat it and many do .Go For It ! ! !

 I have been advised by someone I respect a lot to rethink my post .Well , you know He is right and I missed it in the passion of the moment .There are those who are truly dis-abled and I did not mean to be-little their conditions here .There are those who for some reason can only watch the world go by because of their dis-abilities . If I have offended any of you out there I do hereby render a sincere and understanding apology for my brashness .

I'd sincerely suggest you rethink this post. I will respond once and then count on you to do the right thing.

Disabilities are a real thing.

If you are trying to engage a semantic discussion, regarding labels, don't please.

It's wrong to say to someone that they are not in fact disabled. They are. There are things that they cannot do, that others can.

I know you mean well.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

ToastAnd to add to your post, knowing what you meant, it occured to me that there is much we can do to assist the disabled in modeling, and maybe learn something too.

   I know what you mean .Where a lot of my thinking came from was working with Desert Storm veterans who had lost limbs and as is understandable were depressed . I endeavored to make them mad at Me and then they would improve on their therapy and why , Because they were gonna show this retired gunny they could do it ! . That mind set has gotten me into trouble before.      T.B.

Modeling IS a good therapy for helping retain/regain hand/eye coordination, being able to focus on details and small detail work (ie. painting cockpits, etc.).  Helps in steadying the hands, and relieves the days stresses, so long as you stop before the frustration sets in.

I applaude anyone that can do anything to assist anyone less able.

Now if there was only a cure for 10 non-opposable thumbs (mine).

LOL.

 There have been days I have thought that I only had short stubby clumsy appendages that didn't want to be thought of as fingers, that is for sure . Ten Thumbs ? You must build a lot of 1/48 scale Armor LOL.  T.B.

After the 1/350 Gato  ( during which you would have thought I was a 30+ year Master Chief in Zumwalt's Navy) and the 1/48 Mustang, I plan on staying with mostly 1/32 aircraft and 1/350 and bigger surface ships.

In contrast to some of the others on here and those who might be tempted to give modeling a try, if my fingers are my biggest problem, then I happen to be one lucky guy, and thank my lucky star every morning and night.

While not rising to the level of real disabilities, there have been a couple times when modeling was an very important part of my mental & physical rehab following surgeries which left me questioning how much I would ever be able to do again.

Modelers who overcome much more serious obstacles have my profound respect and admiration. What a great hobby we share!

Tanker - Builder, we all have disabilities, whether phyiscally, mentally, known or unknown but we all have it. me, i was born with cerebal palsey also known as just cp 57yrs this october. it affected both legs, my left side & my speech. i've had 2 operations on my legs when i was 4 & 10yrs old. my speech is now normally normal like everybody else with the occasional hiccup. when i was younger, most people didn't notice my legs but my left arm unless i was tired then they noticed my legs. for the last 10yrs, i've very slowly been loosing the mobility in my legs to the point it is always noticeable how bad i walk. what i lost in my body i gained in my brain of creativity of building model warships plus aircraft & carpentry besides computers. i have an instinct of how something goes or comes together but tell people how i do that that i just wing it.

Ddp59;

 Well , my modeling hat is off to you . I can't even begin to imagine what went through your mind at times . Recovering from a robbery gone bad , in which I was one of the victims I feel for you .

 Tha one that lodged in my spine was the one I sweated . Four years of intensive P.T. Which I still say stands for Pain and Torture , I walk pretty good for 73 .

    Having served in two branches of the military , and successfully I might add and being Not physically impaired in any way I won't go into my thoughts .Could I ever do the things with my family outside the chair, that I loved,anymore?

 Yeah , Water and Snow skiing ,Scuba Diving etc . My mind was wasted . I fell into my modeling big time . It helped get over the anger and such . It is therapy and one in your shoes knows that well . Model on my friend .    Tanker - Builder

it was normal to me because i did not know differently compared to you who was normal til shot & having to go thru PT. me, i had to learn to walk 3 times, the 1st time like all of us have to do then the next 2 times after the operations especially the 2nd operation when i was in an "A" cast from the toes to the waist with a bar across my ankles besides 5 wire stitches in me.

Hi ;

 Yeah , That could not have been any fun at all .

Now a neighbor had a child born with your problems .He turned into the sweetest and most creative of any of the neighbors kids . Boy , did he love cats though . He had at least twelve last time I was home .

 He had one surgery in which he got those stitches . I always wondered why . That too could not have been any kind of comfort . What you went through and are still dealing with is to be understood and given much thought .

 I have noticed things though .I worked for a fine young fellow , just building his business . He had a very bad form of Tourettes . His idol - Frank LLoyd Wright !

 The quality of his work . Impeccable ! No one should comment Unless they can say I will walk in your shoes for a month . They would learn a lot  ,Maybe ! What do you think ?  T.B.

Oh there are plenty of "disabled" modelers on this site. They are unable to finish one model before starting one, two, five, thirteen other ones.... Big Smile
