Yeah, I was going to ask you bout the Nautilus. It says some outrageous speed under water and another outrageous speed surface. The range is in lightyear's . So question G, if it stays on the water and underwater then what's the deal with the lightyear distances? Does it go in space? And if so, why water?

 

For once Steve, I have no answer!    I never really watched Nadia, so I'm just as much in the dark as you.  I just thought the mecha in the show was kinda neat, especially the bad guys' fish-like submarines.

A lot of fiction writers forget that water is unforgivably "draggy", and so they give their creations unrealistic performance figures.  That being said, the Soviet-era Alpha Class subs could allegedly reach something like 50+ knots underwater.  But they were as loud as a Disater Area concert going at that speed.  (See Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - the BBC TV series, not the terrible movie, for the Disater Area reference.)

My last two pick-ups:

I picked up the Tony despite having the older Hasegawa kit in the stash.  Will build both at the same time eventually.  While I'd prefer to have a 1/48 Short Stirling, I'd always wanted to build one.  Looks to be a pretty good kit.

I think it is time for me to add to this string. 

First update is not a model but something I am excited to share, a 1968 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 convertible in 1/18 die-cast by ACME. With numerous impressive up scale details like both soft tops (up and down); nice door treatment (handles, door jams, locks, interior panels); opening trunk with detailed spare; floor mats with Pontiac logo's; Cloth seatbelts with PE buckles; detailed and readable hood tachometer; quality head and tail lights without ugly center posts; full under the hood details like plumbed brake booster, radiator hoses, plug wires, wired battery, plumbed window washer, fender bracing and detailed hood latch; underside fully detailed to include brake and fuel lines, etc. 



Now it's model time, starting with these new additions. And I can't believe it either, I actually purchased some armor or military ground vehicles.

Believe it or not, over 50 years of modeling and I've never built a Sherman tank, got one now; even if it's an IDF Super Sherman. I may have to get metal individual links (?):

Drums, that M51 builds nice, but has a problem with the mantlet dust cover fit. New tracks would help, but are not a necessity.

Found this one on eBay last week for auction at about half off the best shop prices. And NOBODY else bid on it. Since the Thunderbirds started here at Luke AFB in 1953 flying these, it’s going to my Luke collection. Something of a new and old kit, as it is metal plated like the old Hawk F-84 that I built decades ago.

Actually, the Buccaneer is only scary for its huge box!  But the other assortment of kits are most weird (Hungarian AA tank) and spooooooooky (Mach Poo LeDuc 022).  And the XB-48 book is to keep me up all night.

John I know that you have to sand of the plating on the glueing surfaces. But seam clean up. I'm thinking of possibly trying foil to cover those areas. Or some of the new fancy metallic paints after getting the seams smoothed out extremely well.

Word on the street is that it is a good kit, miles ahead of the older one.  Airfix is getting better all the time, but they are not Tamiya yet.  I lurk over on Britmodeller to collect information, and the impression I get is that it is good, but not perfect.  it's a big airplane and has a most singular shape, and the finished kits I have seen look fabulous.

I'm more of a RAF man, and like the low level wraparound camo scheme.  But I picked this kit up because I like the Bucc, and thought it would be cool looking all folded up.

I want that buccaneer and the new 1/48 Lynx boxing.  Airfix wants 30 pounds for shipping so I'll wait til they get here.  If  you spend over 200 pounds you get free shipping to the US but....

Those schemes are cool. Nice to hear about a new Bucc kit; agree that Airfix has really stepped up their game. I've done some of their newer kits and they were generally pretty good, hopefully this one will be in the same league with those.

I hear you and had a p-40b, Hawker Hunter and a Gloster Javelin in the cart and balked seeing how most of my gear is in storage during our move transition.  I'll wait until I get my shop up and running early next year.

I have a few of the P-40Bs and a Javelin in the stash. All good kits. The Javelin has been on hold until I can figure out how to do an all black cockpit up right.

I wanted to share this one. I've been on a Tom Daniel kick and actually ordered a couple of signed rebooted Atlantis kits from his website www.tomdaniel.com

I started wanting a 1/24 Red Baron and found this one on eBay. It is my first ever ebay purchase. Really.

And this comes with a question to you more experienced eBay customers. The box is immaculate as is the shrink wrap. The seller is 100% rated. However, I have heard of such things being re-shrink wrapped.

So my question is even though I'd prefer to keep this in the shrink wrap, I'll never really know what is inside unless I look.

Anyone care to opine?

First off Greg, CONGRATS on scoring that vintage Red Baron kit.  That's the one kit that has eluded me.  I started my Tom Daniels "Obession" several years ago because his kits were such a big part of modeling in my youth.  I don't shop on ebay so my only resource are the vendors at local contests and this kit has been my "White Whale".  I'm also obessed with Deals Wheels kits.  With the recent 1/32 Tom Daniels funny car releases by Atlantis I can only hope that they'll release more of his kits.  Now regarding the mystery of your kit, I would ask you, "Are you a model builder or a model collector?"  If your intentions are to build it, then go ahead and open it and enjoy that sweet smell of vintage styrene.  If you're a collector, then since the seller had a favorable rating, I'd keep it in the shrink wrap, put it on display, and sit back and enjoy the waves of nostalgia.  Either way, I think that it's a "Win-Win" for you.

As a non-collector I don't really have an opinion. But some people will buy two, one to keep in the un-opened perfect state and the second to open and build.

Hey Tom! First off, thanks for your reply and I'm glad I've found a friend in a fellow Tom Daniel fan!

You probably know this, but you can buy the new release funny cars on his website for a very reasonable price and get them signed by him.

I'm sure I've avoided eBay for the same reasons as you all of these years, but my obsession seems to have won out.

Oh, you might want to check out J-Bar hobbies. They are out of MI and I just bought two original Monogram TD kits from them as well. Both the eBay order and J-Bar order got to me in about 3 business days very well-packaged.

Re your advice, I'm a collector until I decide to build one, hence my dilemna!
