1/400 VS 1/429 - The Difference, Visually speaking
Posted by HooYah Deep Sea on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 10:50 AM

I've got a project that's been on the back burners for some time involving a major bashing of the Revell ARIZONA. The big question is, visually speaking, how much difference is there between 1/400 scale verses 1/429? I have played with the numbers, but since most people don't really know the size of 'things', can I put 1/400 scale components on a 1/429 hull and have them 'look' okay? THe cost of locating 1/429 scale components is the deciding factor here, as I can buy a 1/400 scale kit much cheaper than buying a few 3D 1/429 scale pieces/parts.

Opinions please. ( I'm figuring that several of you have already figured out where I'm going with this.)

Hi;

      I usually manage to mix scales successfully in that scale from ,Believeit or not 1/350 all the way to 1/500. It all depends on what it is. So be careful and remember "If it looks right, it is". Many times I use one half the strip on H.O. scale Rooftop Freight Car walkways from Tichy Train Group for rails on the scales you are talking about. Sanding thin and such allows them to bend BUT, they don't look bad!

My limit is maximum10% deviation. So I think you will be fine.

I prefer underscale to overscale, but you have to work with what's available.

During quantine, no one cares.  Even before, I have never cared.  That's just me.

I'm looking at a "If she had survived Pearl Harbor" scenario. I have no doubt that it's been done before, but I am considering the possibilities.

And then, maybe adding a helo deck and VLS in place of Turrets 1 and 4 .  .  . Okay, just joking on that part.

Between Chesley's concept drawing and what was actually done on Pennsy and Nevada, There is a lot of room for flexibility. It could be fun.

Now Then;

    I have taken some Arizona models and upgraded them to carriers. This just shows. Great minds do think alike. I always believed that you can create anything if you have  a designing streak within you!

Okay, next question; Academy brand kits, are they any good?
