Tell us about your great model finds!

We all have had them.  Tell us about the awesome deal/deals you got on getting models.  Estate sales that no one knew about, on-line purchases that were too good to pass up, yard sales where you found boxes of kits for next to nothing....you get the point.  I'll start off with my favorite incident:

Back in '97, while stationed at Eglin AFB, Fla, I was invited to a model club meeting by a friend in my shop. I hadn't been putting any models together since my first PCS move and I learned how TMO was going to "handle" my models.  I kept on buying models just never built any.   I accepted just for something to do.  Meeting was alright, met some really cool people, saw some really great builds!  As we were walking out after the meeting, one of the members (another A.F. guy), handed out these 3-4 page lists of models he was going to sell.  He was PCSing to Korea and decided to get rid of his stash and start over buying the good stuff in Korea (that's what he said!).  So I took one and really didn't think anything about it.  So I got back to work (working swings) and sat down to run my F-15 antenna.  Got to a point were the baby ran on its own for a while and started to look at the list.  I put little tick marks next to the ones I wanted to ask about.  One of my friends walks up and asks what I was looking at.  I told him and he said he liked models and would like to check out the list.  Oddly enough I had picked about 1/3 of the list, and my friend had found another 1/3 he was interested in.  We figured he would give us a good deal for as many as we wanted.  Well, another friend pops in and asks what we were doing.  We show him the list and you guessed it, he was interested in the remaining 1/3.  Now the total amount of models we are talking about was around 100-105 kits.  They varied from aircraft to armor, to sci-fi, some boats, and figures.  Type of models you ask, well, a very good selection I would say....for example Tamiya's 1/48 Lancaster, 3 1/32 F-4's, 2 1/32 F-16's, 1/48 B-17's, B-24's, B-29, and the infamous B-36, just to name a few of the aircraft.  Panthers, Tigers, Puma's, and infrantry from every country!  Just about every Star Trek vessel...o.k., I'll stop now.  So, I call this guy up (he lived on base) and asked if he had sold any of the models yet.  He had not!  So I asked.......How much for all of them?  There was silence on the other end of the phone! Huh?  "uh, you want ALL of them?  There are over 100 kits?!"  Yea, how much for all of them?  I could hear him cover the phone with his hand and tell his wife that we wanted all of them.  Even with the phone covered I could hear her joyful scream!  He comes back and says "well, we hadn't considered this....how about $300?"  Now the silence was on my end!  My heart skipped about 3 beats, fluttered, and began to race as the 3.78 seconds it took to realize this guy was asking approximately $3.00/kit!  So I was a good citizen and asked if his offer of $300 was correct.  It was correct!  I told him we would be there in about 30 minutes!  We ran to the ATM, each withdrew $100 and proceeded to this guys house.  3 vehicles!  It took all 3 of our vehicles to load all the models.  It gets better!  As we are leaving, this guys wife comes running out to my car with about 15 more models!  She opens the passenger side door and piled them in what little space I had left, said thank you, and blew me a kiss!  We laughed all the way back to the shop!  We unloaded all the kits in the back dock area and sat on the floor like it was Christmas, and I went through the list handing out everyone's models to them!  After all was said and done, the guys told me to keep the 15 models the lady brought out and even ended up GIVING me a couple from the own stacks of models!  There were a lot of great kits I got that night, but the Lancaster is still my favorite!

Please don't hate me.  I only did what any other plastic loving human being would have done! Whistling

Now, let's hear some more awesome stories!

I had a client that I built about 20 or 30 models for and had around 15 more of his on my bench that I just finished. I only saw him every 2 weeks or so .... so I didnt  know that he had passed away. When his wife answered the door  she had no idea who I was or why I had a box for him. I explained who I was and about the built kits in my hand  (he had per-paid me so I wasnt looking for cash. She was concerned that he owed me.)   She then led me to his Train room and I left the box on the workbench. She then procceded to tell me that her kids   ( all in their 50s ) and grandkids had no interest in anything but the train layout.   She then told me that she couldnt think of a better way to dispose of them than to give them to someone who would actually build them.......   I think I may have passed out or something .!  Next thing you know I have 50 kits in my car! and they wer'nt all trains.  he had a little bit of everything.   I still have about 20 that I havent touched yet.  Still to this day I dont know how I feel about this.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Littletimmy, now that is cool!  I would feel honored.  What a super thing to do.  She gave back to the one who was giving.  Again, great first story!  Thanks!

Nothing quite as extensive, but once when I went yard sailing with the wife, there was a cardboard paper box (the type that holds reams of paper with a replaceable lid) stuffed full of old Matchbox armor and aircraft kits (1/76 & 1/72). I asked how much the kits were because they weren't marked. She said $5 if you take the whole box.

There were 23 kits stuffed/squished inside that box, all the smaller type planes and tanks. It worked out to about 20 some odd cents a kit. Thanks to the thick Matchbox sprues, nothing but the boxes were worse for wear.

Another time while stationed in Alabama, I went into an Odd Lots store (a clearance store) in the mid 90s. They had stacks of 1/35 scale Esci T-55, Ti-67, and M60A1 Blazer tanks for $4.99. These were kits that retailed for $25.

Years ago I got the Tamiya 1/1350th Enterprise for $29.99.  Regreted not picking up two of them.

So far Craigs List has been my best deals. I got about 10 armor kits in one stash for only $20 (including a Tamiya StuG III Early and a Tamiya IS-3). I scored an even bigger hit  in another stash of 35 kits of which many were Dragon armor and figure kits, plus 4 board games for just $30.

Ahhhhh the 1/350 Enterprise!  I picked one up at a Zayre's in Brandon, Fl when I was about 10.  Don't think it was a Tamiya, but it was only like $10-$15.  $29.99 for a Tamiya!  I would have thought about getting 2 myself.  Great story!

Awesome finds so far.  So don't be shy, tell us your great finds!  If you have more than one.....do another post!  It sounds weird, but I really enjoy hearing these great find stories.  O.K., since Tigerman mentioned Craigslist, here's another one (or 2 I should say).

Was checking my local Craigslist and saw a post for a "large amount of models....too many to list, call if you have a specific one you are looking for, I can go look.  Lots of Nascar.  These are my husbands models and they have to go.  $10 each! "  So as you can imagine, I thought, ohhhhhh, domestic dispute, angry spouse.  So I shot an e-mail and get a reply to meet at a certain time.  The kicker was it is like less than 2 minutes from my house!  So I go and it ends up being the husband I meet.  So I'm thinking no domestic riffs here.  We start talking and come to find out he was the ex-fire chief for the city and he used to work part-time at the local hobby shop! Which is no longer around.  But he would get paid (yeah, you guessed it) in models and supplies!  So he has tons of models sitting around on shelves.  So for $10, I'm picking up 1/144 Saturn V's, 1/32 Gemini capsules, 1/35 Chinook coppers, and about 5-6 various 1/35 armor pieces (88mm, half track for the 88, M4A3E2, just to name a few.  I have since called and gone back 2 more times to help him reduce his stash!  How does someone come across a part-time job that pays in models!!!!!!!

Another Craigslist story: Saw a listing for a lot of 6 models for x amount of dollars (was about $20 a piece).  Well, I only wanted about 4 of the 6, so I e-mail and ask if he would sell me just the 4 for $20 a piece.  No go, he wanted to get rid of all of them at once, but he would sell all of them to me for $15 a piece.  I thought about it, but didn't want to spend $30 on 2 trade kits.  So I told him if he changed his mind to shot me an e-mail.  About a week or so later he e-mails and asks which kits I was interested in and if I would want to come check out more kits he had that he wanted to get rid of.  Sure, I'll take a look.  Long story short, I got a Hasegawa 1/72 B-47, 1/48 B-52, 1/48 C-47, 1/48 F-101, 1/48 F-104, 1/48 F-15E, 1/32 F4F-4 Marrtlet, 1/48 F-84G, 1/48 JU52/3M, 1/72 KC-97L, and a 1/271 Robert E. Lee Steamboat for $10 each!!!!!!!!  Like a kid in a candy store!

Some cool stories so far.  I have one that's  somewhat dated.

Just before taking  a leave from the hobby I made a big score and if you factor  in for inflation I think it still equates to  a deal by current standards.

Back in the day I used to go to this traveling vendors flea market  type of deal called Jolly JIms  These events were huge and took hours to take in. I already had made several trips back to the car with arms and hands full of neat deals  but nothing in the way of models like I had hoped for.  Back  then I had this intuitive built in radar for model kits and from afar I thought I could make out a stack of boxes all facing away from me  so that their contents were not apparent. My concentration  was suddenly interrupted  with  a firm and decisive arm  tug from my better half. She had had enough !  I,  the reluctant boyfriend  agreed.

Luck struck as she felt the need to use the facilities.  Before she took two steps I was already at that table  and my radar had not failed me.  Five large boxes full 1/35  armor , figures, and various scale planes. I knew I didn't  have much time to take it all in so I asked the vendor  how much for everything . I was so excited that I hadn't  even bothered to take notice of the vendor . There was a slight pause and then I heard the  prepubescent voice of  a boy no more than say 13  maybe 14 say the magical  words " how does $35  sound.".  that's  when I looked up realizing who he was and with a concerned tone asked him "Are you sure?"  The boy stated  "Sure , my dad had to do something and left me in charge".   I remember looking around for the remnants of some adult presence and in doing so observed my better half glaring at me from afar. So I reluctantly handed the boy $35 dollars and walked out with everything.  Now I remember this day so vividly because I still wonder if the poor kid was read the riot act like never before from his father . I know I was as my better half helped  carry the boxes.

In the end total carnage came out to well over 100 kits.

That's what I'm talking about!  Sometimes, shock and awe tactics must be used.  So over 100 kits!  Less than 35 cents a kit......you may very well have the best deal so far!  How could she be mad after that big of a deal?!  Thanks for sharing.

While there with my wife, I bought four kits; the only Esci M60A1 and M60A3 in the stack, an Esci T-55 and Esci T-55(M). A few days later, I went back during my lunch break and bought the remaining kits that consisted of the Esci M60A1 Blazer (3 each) and the Esci Ti-67 (2 each). Those two variants probably had a dozen or so of each when I first saw the kits at the store and were down the just five total kits a couple days later. I was glad I got the first four when I saw them.

Sounds like I bought my ESCI "T-74  MBT" kits at roughly the same time from a discount store in my area.
Only the T-74 MBT kits were in stock, but price was discounted down to $2.00 each.

Local Swap Meet:

Purchased four AIRFIX 1/24 scale kits for $5.00 each:

2- Ju-87B STUKAs

2- Bf-109 E

1978 production kits so decals are poor; no boxes.

Biggest downside is finding aftermarket decals as decals for those kits seem to be OOP.

Was an equally good deal on a large stack of Monogram B-52 kits for $5 each but didn't add them as I was running out of trunk space for what I did buy.

Wow, great stories guys!

I build and paint 28mm gaming figures too. They're tiny lead or pewter figures of knights and monsters for fantasy games like Dungeons & Dragons and spacemen and aliens for SF games. Few years back a friend who used to own a small shop that sold used video games and anime DVDs called me and told me he'd been called by a lady who had ended up with a bunch of gaming stock from a closed down bookstore who wanted to dispose of it. I figured it would be a bunch of krap but I thought it would be worth checking out.

When I got there the lady had a pile of old out of production stuff, most krap but some Grenadier and Mithril figures that have been OOP for 10-15 years and only go for inflated prices on ebay if you can find it at all. I ended up toting off four or five large boxes of stuff, for maybe a third or less than it's worth. My friend was laughing at me on the way home on how my eyes had popped out of my head on seeing all this stuff.

No, I bought $20 worth which was a reasonable amount to my wife. It was easy because I paid $20 for four kits that would have cost $100 at normal retail price. And I got the ones that they had the fewest of just to make sure I got them. I went back without her knowing about it to get as many as I could because at that price, they were too good to pass up. All they had left were the five kits and I bought them up.

I did find it interesting that the last ones left were the two IDF variants, but except for the decals and extra parts for the IDF versions, they were the same kits as the ones that got bought up quickest.

Mono B-52.....as in 1/72 Mono B-52.....as in the one I have on my "youth wish list" and can't find for less than $50!  Crying $5!!!!!!!  I would have bought ALL OF THEM!  Just cuz.....everyone would have gotten one for birthdays or Christmas!

What awesome prices on 1/24 scale anything!  We have a show here in April, hope I get some great deals like that!

I would have liked to have the B-52 kits- only so much room in the car.
By the end of the day, someone did buy all the Monogram 1/72 kits..and pretty much everything else the guy was selling:
From what I understand, the dealer had purchased a barn full of 1970s vintage kits from someone in Wisconsin.
Water leakage during storage all those years had ruined many of the boxes and decals, but plastic parts were mostly intact.inside their bags.

Local Swap Meet:

2- Ju-87B STUKAs

2- Bf-109 E

1978 production kits so decals are poor; no boxes.

Indifferent woooaaahhhhhh.  oh sorry.  Man, I would have rented a trailer or something!  I sure hope this show in April has some stuff like that!  What show was this?  You're probably in a big city huh?  Here in Vermont, the show is being held at a school!  I'm not holding out for too much, but you just never know!  I keep reaching at the picture hoping I can grab 2 or 3 of those B-52's!  I have not seen that packaging before.  Were they 1/72?

Was the Chicago, Il suburban Butch O'Hare Swap meet last November.
I will state this type of selection was unusual so I don't expect that kind of deal this year.
I,too, keep reaching at the photo to grab those 1970s era 1/72 B-52 kits.
All kits on the table were 1970s era vintage production.
I would not be surprised if the kits cost $5 new at the time they were produced.
Not surprisingly, all of the kits were sold in a couple of hours.
I believe the only kits that dealer still had when I left were a stack of 1979 production Star Wars X-Wing and Tie-Fighter kits

So it was just someone renting a table and selling their stash stuff?  Chicago!  Yeah, you will probably have a little more than we do here!  Like I said, I have a "youth wish list" of kits I'm working on getting.  1/72 B-52 is one of the top 5 kits.  I remember (sometime in the late 70's) walking into Toys-R-Us during Christmas time and seeing it on an endcap.  Bigger box version, but the same one, and just standing there staring at it.  Of course being younger, the box seemed gigantic to me.  But low and behold, Christmas morning came and I immediately recognized the size of the box under the tree and ripped into that one first to make sure my Christmas was going to be a happy one!  Ahhh the memories!

Wow those are awesome SG, guess I'm dating myself but the first models I built were in those same white Monogram boxes! Maybe you should have picked up those Star Wars kits though, some of them are worth a lot now but I'm not sure which ones.

My best story is not about models but model paint.  Back in the early 90's I was working at Home Depot. one of the guys knew I was a model builder. Said he had some Model Master paints laying around  would I want them. I said sure how much. He said $20.  Kind of forgot about it but couple of weeks later he showed up with it. 11 apple baskets full.  Brought them home and counted them. 440 bottles of paint. Went to pay him a couple days later.  He had quit so I got them for free.  Still have some of them 20 years later.
