Bench update and a look at my stash
Posted by SchattenSpartan on Saturday, July 12, 2014 2:20 PM

Hey guys it's me again,

After a 2-month modelling hiatus caused by a lot of stress I had lately I'm finally back at the bench! I realized now more than ever before how small the free space on my quite large bench (a 2m x 60cm desk) I actually had for modelling. Most of the space was occupied by tools, my toolbox and paint jars. I decided to put an end to this problem and this is what I came up with:

I have plenty of room in all those drawers to store all my modelling stuff quite easily.

From top to bottom:

The first drawer holds all my tools:

The second one contains my paints:

The first 3 rows are RLM colors, the next 2 are USAAF/USN colors, followed by a row of RAF/Japanese aircraft colors. Next up are the paints I use for armor, 2 rows of generic colors and the last one for miscellanious colors (mostly for modern aircraft) To the right are a bunch of Tamiya colors I got to add to my Gunze paint lineup (mostly paints that work better for certain things or that simply aren't available in Gunze's paint range)

The drawer didn't have any rails in it to keep the jars from sliding around, so I simply bought some cheap wood profiles (1cm x 1cm) to build one myself. They are glued in place using white glue:

Next up is the drawer for all my weathering stuff as well as my scratchbuilding supplies:

the next 2 have all my aircraft AM goodies in them:

Resin:

Only the far right stuff is 1/48, the rest is 1/32.

PE, seatbelts, decals and masks:

The bottom drawer contains my small collection of Armor accessories:

It's not much because I usually only add a metal gun barrel and sometimes a set of Friuls to my armor builds. There are exceptions of course (in this case a Pz.IV I'm slowly working on atm)

I also got me two shelves to store my stash in (instead of stacking the boxes on the floor):

Armor stash:

From top to bottom: Modern vehicles/ Russian WW2, British/American WW2, Tiger/King TIger/Panther

German TDs/light tanks/Halftracks, Pz.III/Pz.IV, Artillery/Field guns (and Eduard's Hetzer 'cause it didn't fit anywhere else Wink)

Aircraft stash:

1/48 Jets/Dual Combos, 1/48 Allied WW2,  1/48 Allied/German WW2

1/48 German WW2, 1/32 Allied WW2, 1/32 German/Japanese WW2

My 1/32 multi-engined aircraft are on top of the armor and aircraft stashs due to their boxes being so huge... Stick out tongue

I was going to post a pic of the actual bench too, but my camera messed the file up, so that one has to wait untill I'm back home from my 2-week trip...

My stash is by far not as big as the ones most uf you guys have, but It's still growing a bit and I'm quite happy with it myself (I actually have more 1/48 aircraft and a LOT more 1/32 aircraft kits than my LHS Embarrassed)

I hope you like it!

Cheers, Clemens Big Smile

Thanks for posting this. What an excellent idea for organization. I need to find a drawer like that!

Nice stash as well. Glad you're back and hope the stressful stuff is behind you.

There's more boxes on your shelf than I've seen in some hobby shops. Wink

Thanks guys!

Of course you can do the same with your modelling supplies! Smile The drawer itself is from Ikea (called "Alex")

Phil: My hobby shop has a whole lot more boxes than I have, they just don't have that much aircraft kits in stock although they can order them on requst within 2 weeks.

That is a nice clean set of drawers you've got! I'm going to steal your idea of how to organise paints in the drawer too. I have been trying to think of a way of organising my paints, and this looks like the best option.

Thanks for sharing.

PS: that stash is something to behold - what are your thoughts on the Meng M2A3?? I've heard great things about it, had it in my hands at the LHS today, but sense prevailed and it wasn't added to my stash :( It's on the list though ;)

I was in a similar situation when I saw it at my LHS. Only difference is I was unable to resist. The parts look great in the box. A lot of details and no flash at all. The fact someone was building one of those kits right next to me while I was trying not to immediately buy it didn't help much either...

Hey !

You are missing two ! The S.A.9 " Gaskin Mobile missile launcher ) and the German - Russian offensive 9 German " Dicker Max " self propelled gun) .

P.S. I do like that drawer system .Where'd you get it ?

You are way too organized, Clemens.

Just kidding, mate. Looks great! Love the drawer unit and organization. I do a similar thing, but the more shallow drawers you have would work a lot better than the my deeper drawers ( one of those plastic roller drawer units from a hardware superstore).

I I had a stash close to yours, I think my significant other would disown me. Great stash!

Want to see a pic of your bench when you get back.

The drawer system is from Ikea (called "Alex").

The S.A.9 isn't really on my wishlist, but the Dicker Max definitely is!

My bench ain't that special, mate. It's just a rather big desk in front of the window of my man-cave (for better lighting)... That won't keep me from posting a pic or 2 though Big Smile

Yep, already checked out "Alex" at Ikea. Smile

Is it heavy enough so unit doesn't tip if a heavily loaded drawer is opened? The plastic units aren't so good in that respect, though they work ok.

Still wanna see the bench anyway. If nothing else, to see what a clean worktop looks like. I've long since forgotten. Bow Down

Oh, that piece of furniture is one heavy sucker! It weights in at 32 kg (something around 64 pounds), so I think there's no way of getting it to fall over....

I think that weight makes it worth the price alone. My plastic drawer unit is so light and flimsy, it rolls on it's coasters when I open a drawer. (and no, no locking coasters) I get by, though.

Add me to the list of plagerisers. after seeing what you've done, I should be able to add some internal drawer organization/anti-sliding about devices. Bow Down

The drawer sysem has some coasters too (not locking either) but I chose to leave them off. Glueing hose wooden profiles in place isn't hard at all: simply put 2 paint bottles in the drawer and glue the profile in place leaving a bit more space than the botles need, once you got the wood in place, remove the bottles again so you don't glue them down too in ase some glue spills. Just repeat that as many times as you want too. You have to watch out for the screws on the side of the drawers BTW. Leave a few mm more space at the far right and far left paint rail so the screw heads don't interfere with your paint bottles.
