Um... Now that I've started, how do I stop?
Posted by MrStecks on Monday, June 26, 2017 3:45 PM

Hey All.  I returned to this hobby back in March of this year and I've been loving it!  But I have a problem now.  I keep buying kits!  And they are starting to stack up a bit.

I know this is a common problem among modelers, but it's really starting to annoy me.  Last week I bought two kits that I probably won't get to until next year.  I was just so drawn by the subject matter that I couldn't resist.   Argh....

Is there a support group for this?    Confused

What are some ways that you regulate yourselves when it comes to buying kits?  Is it just will power?  Does your personal budget constrain you?  A combination of both or something completely different?  I try hard to live within my means, but this hobby is starting to make it difficult.  I'm not going to stop building models. So any advice on how to resist buying kits would be most appreciated.  Smile

Cheers, Mark

Don't beat yourself up. I've seen people with thousands of kits in their stash, I personally probably have around 100.

One thing though. Tastes change. I've gone from railroads to armor to airplanes to ships. So don't buy too many of any one subject.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I'm wondering why you consider this a problem.

MrStecks
Is there a support group for this?

Yes.... your on it right now.

MrStecks
What are some ways that you regulate yourselves when it comes to buying kits?

Try not to leave the house with ANY money in your wallet. ( having a wife kinda helps with this.)

MrStecks
Is it just will power?

I can't help you there.... I can't leave a hobby store without at least sniffing the wrapper on a kit!

MrStecks
Does your personal budget constrain you?

I will sell my own blood if it will get me a kit when I'm broke !!!

MrStecks
So any advice on how to resist buying kits would be most appreciated.

BUA HA HA HA HAAAAA !!! Your soul now belongs to Revell of Germany !!! BUA HA HA HAAAA!!! Abandon ALL hope ye whome enter Hobby Lobby !!!

Seariously tho.... you will find your tastes will vary from year to year so try not to buy 15 of the same thing...... at the same time..... in the same week.....

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

I simply ask my wife if I can buy another kit.  She always says "NO!"

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

I assume that you will start going to model shows at some point.  Do yourself a favor, don't take much money with you.

As your wife starts to recognize that the thing is bigger than she is, watch out at Christmas and birthdays.  My wife thought she could pull kits out of my stash and wrap them as a "wonderful gift" for me.  I nipped that one in the bud, but you must be watchful.

(That started at our first Christmas together.  Since then we have celebrated our thirtieth wedding anniversary and she was ok with building a shed in the back yard for my stash.)

Yeah, I'm sure a wife would help to keep me in line.  Don't have one of those though.  Came close a couple times... managed to screw it up each time.  LOL

tempestjohnny...  wow!  I'm not so worried about my small collection anymore.

The best way to reduce your stage is to build, build, build!

Ha, I should follow my own advice.

I have made the connection that models for guys are like shoes for women, we are hopelessly lost in the eternal search for the perfect model, but usually settle for the next shiny thing on the shelf.

This remark is NOT intended to offend our modeling sisters here on the forums nor in the world as with every rule there are exceptions it is merely a satirical comparison. NO OFFENSE IMPLIED OR INTENDED.

we're modelers it's what we do

No, its not a problem, its a condition. And like other conditions, you just have to live with it.

When i buy a kit, its very rare i will get to build it within 5 years.

MrStecks
Is there a support group for this?    Confused

Yes, unforunatly it can make matters worse as you see what the condition in otehrs leads them to buying and you decide you want one as well.

MrStecks
What are some ways that you regulate yourselves when it comes to buying kits?  Is it just will power?

Whats will power

MrStecks
Does your personal budget constrain you?

No. I have a monthly modelling budget, its always gets excedded. When it comes to kits, i either buy cheap or save up.

You don't have a problem until you toss the wife's clothes out of her closet to make room to store said stash.......but that's another problem together.

Being by myself, I tend to grab whatever takes my eye at the time.  My budget is pretty open so it opens all kinds of stupid issues (like a 1/100 Victory and not building any sail for 50 years).

Hubby tells me no all the time.  I don't listen.  I can't afford much anyway, but I have a corner in my bedroom that I keep my stash in, and living in a cape cod style house, the ceiling is at a slant in that area, so I keep the stack of models either at or below the line where the ceiling and wall meet.  He is probably much more tolerant than any wife.  He has his hobbies that take up a lot of space, so he really can't complain about mine.Big Smile

The next time your wife asks "When did you buy this kit?", tell her "Oh that? I bought  that one a long time ago."

Works for me...

I keep telling myself  "I'm not going to buy any more models until I build some from my stash."..so I built 2... and bought 4.  Funny how the stash grows.

This is a great thread thanks. My wife and I were laughing at the post and answers.

I received $20 for Father's day during our trip to Dallas. The money was going to be spent at Eagle Quest along with $25 I brought but I didn't find anything I wanted. When I got home I bought a kit a HL, a few more at Toy Town and still another at our local HS including a handful of paint (I have big hands). I Justified all this because I was going to spend my wife's $20 and my $25 at Eagle Quest and I needed to ship it back so there was even more I would have spent...so I obesely had about $25 more to spend equaling $70. My daughter only sent me a Happy Father's day text but I'm sure they intended one getting me something but I was out of town so there's some more I could spend on myself, on their behalf you understand.

So here I come home with an arm full of kits and a handful of paint but I still had the original $20 in my pocket, hmm. I went to our local IPMS meeting and guess what, there was still more stuff that equaled $20 what a surprise.

So no Mr Stecks I don't think you have a problem. And I usually do exactly what Black Sheep does, although I think she is memorizing my stash when I gone because when I use that excuse anymore she gives me a funny look.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Don't think of it as screwing up - choose to think of those as 'narrow escapes'. You're much better off, trust me.

I have the same problem, but I am a bargain hunter. I managed to pick up Tamiya 1/32 P51D/K, 1/32 Corsair bubble top, and 1/48 Beaufighter for $210. But yes, they now sit on my shelf. Too scared to start one.

I have been able to keep myself from adding too much to the stash. Mine has been following me around for 30 years until I started actually building them late last year. Couldn't resist the half off sale at Sprue Brothers, though, so 2 more added. I have, however, spent a small fortune on tools and supplies. 2 airbrushes, a mound of paints, pigments, washes, flex-I-files, micro files, clear plastic cement, etc. I have a flexible shaft grinder coming in the mail as I write. Half off at Micro Mark. The Mrs. loves a bargain, and when I say "half off", she can't help herself, and says "OK".

Dwayne or Dman or just D.  All comments are welcome on my builds.

It could be worse , your stash could consist of one old Tamiya kit and a mostly finished Dragon panzer like mine.

I've been lucky in keeping the expense side of the stash down so far since returning to the hobby. I found a few leftover kits from when I built back in high school that were in storage. Accept for some of the decals, they all were still in great shape. Also, I have a friend that has stumbled upon some kits from time to time and passed them on to me. Most recently, I received the 1/48 Monogram B-17G. The box was opened but all parts were still on the sprues. Of course when I see something I like and it's on sale at HL, I may splurge every now and then.
