Model Shelf project
Posted by keavdog on Sunday, April 15, 2018 7:17 PM

Finally got around to doing my model shelf so I could get my finished models out of boxes and off my workbench.  My wife likes rustic stuff so I started poking around at black pipe shelf kits.  They want so much money for those kits its insane.  I poked around and found the flanges and pipes for very reasonable prices at supplyhouse.com.  I stopped by Lowes and picked up 3 10 foot boards and my wife stained/painted to make them look like old barn wood.  Anyhow, way cheeper and I'm happy and my models are safe :)  I will say... 30 linear feet of shelving gets eaten up pretty fast!

All the flanges and pipes installed

My wife staining and painting the shelves

Final product

Thanks,

John

The distressed wood and black pipes look great together.  Very nice!

You make a great pair. That tank looks great and so do those shelves. I wouldn't even try to work that kind of magic on shelves. My shelves are either glass (in a curio cabinet) or plain unstained 1 x 12 pine.

Looks great. Just hope you don't own any cats. Cats like to go up in high places like shelvings.

Thanks for the kind words.  And yes... we have 1 cat who is fond of my hobby, but so far has only stolen parts but not broken anything

Kev that is quite the set-up. I like the idea with the pipe.

I've been putting off doing something like that.  I have absolutely no display space left.  I bought and erected two bookcases, and am using an old 3-bay entertainment center.

I have added plastic doors to the bookcases, and will need to do the same to the new shelves I intend to build.  They will cover one wall, floor to ceiling.  Airplanes and cars can be easily cleaned, but the ships are very hard to clean, so I need a way to keep dust off of them from the beginning.

Aw , C,mon John !

You know that big of a Yellow Mustang model won't fit on those shelves . LOL.LOL.LOL.

I do like your approach to that problem . Well Done ! T.B.

Ha! I'd love to bring that beast in the house :).  I did just order the 2013 Boss 302.  I'll have some minor challenges converting to a Laguna Seca (particularly with the decals), but should be fun.

Thanks,

John
