I can remember when Popular Mechanics, Science and Mechanics, and to a lessor extent Popular Science used to have articles on scratchbuilt model projects.  Most were model ships,but with occasional airplanes and cars.  Plans were printed in the magazine, but very small.  But you could send for full size plans for a reasonable price.
