P-51B WR*Z

Hey Visconti, I think it would help if you could determine whether that airframe was delivered in natural metal or the OD/NG scheme. While not exactly and answer to your question, I found this about 354th FS/355th FG Mustangs:

"Nearly all of the original allocationi of Mustangs received by the 355th Fighter Group bore a standard two-color camouflage paint scheme. Just prior to the D-Day landings, those few aircraft within the Group with natural metal finishes received an application of green paint to their upper fuselage and wing surface areas. The paints used varied somewhat from dark green to Olive Drab. Most subsequent replacement aircraft witin the Group lacking camouflage would be similarly adorned, a procedure would continue to be adhered to until late August of 1944." -Battle Colors, Insignia and Aircraft Markings of the Eighth Air Force in World War II - Volume II: Fighter Command

I have no idea if this plane was delivered in Natural Metal and subsequently painted, or was delivered already painted in the Olive Drab/Neutral Grey scheme (in this case, why they should have changed the colors of the camouflage? ).

This that you write confirms my opinion that is not entirely impossible that this plane has been painted in Dark Green + Silver (or better Natural Metal). In fact I had found something like that in "Camouflage & Markings" #16 dedicated to the P-51 from which I share two extracts that further confirm this conclusion:

Unfortunately I couldn't find more precise information on the P-51B WR*Z, but at this point I think I don't make a serious mistake if I use the Dark Green/Natural Metal scheme.
