WOW I feel imbarrassed. thought I had alot. But all you guys have many more than I could imagine. I believe I have only 15 to 30 models kits. About 25 to 30 rc vehicles to either restore or build. Guess I am the little guy again.

Just me but I would feel more embarrassed by having a few hundred kits that I would never build,I think you got the sweet spot where your at.

I agree. That is where I'd like to be.

I have roughly 50. 30 or so are from my 1980s model phase. I dropped out of the hobby then restarted years later. I need to donate some from the old stash. I will never build them.

I know somebody that at last count several years ago had over 3,000 unbuilt kits stored in a huge backyard shed on commercial grade shelves!! All aircraft in 1/72 scale, staked by aircraft variant.

Im sure his stash has grown since then. Surprise

Not a very big stash, sold all my stuff a few years back (close to 400 unbuilt kits) and started getting back into it a couple years ago.

Nice little MaK stash there, too, Real G!  Gotta start building those!

I agree Baron, MaK is meant to be built and then dirtied up to high heaven!  Stick out tongue  So many good kits to choose from today, unlike the pre-1999 Great MaK Drought.  It's a great time to be alive!

Yeah...I think I may have a problem.  Tongue Tied

And I have not taken any photos of the aircraft kits in the stash.  Embarrassed  What time is it?  I think it's time to streamline the stash.

First part is to acknowledge the problem, second step is to seek help and I am here to help...for a small fee I'll be happy to help Smile

I don't have an exact count, but after 5 years of whittling it down I have spent the last 2 years replenishing my stash. Somewhere between 120 and 150 as an estimate. I  am slowing my replenishment purchases now (although I have one to pick up from LionHeart hobby in Kyle, Texas when I travel from Austin to San Antonio this Friday, who knows what I will add to that purchase while I am browsing their store). I actually don't expect to build them all.

Wow!  I thought my stash of fewer than 30 was big!  Now I don't feel so bad.  Cool

Wow, you guys are putting me to shame.  I can't imagine having 100+ unbuilt kits around.  I don't know how fast you guys build them but that would take me a lifetime to put together.  Do you expect you'll build them all, or do you acknowledge that there's more there than you'll ever get through?

We don't build 'em fast enough.  That's one reason a stash grows-we buy more kits than we can reasonably build.

I bought kits with an eye towards completing theme builds.  For example, I have a bunch of 1/48 yellow-wings USN aircraft, for a "Yellow Wings" theme.  I have a bunch of airplane kits for a collection of every type of US aircraft used in the Battle of Midway (including a B-24 to finish as General Tinker's ill-fated Wake bomber).  I have another set of kits for a similar "Doomed at the Start" theme collection, USAAF airplanes in the Philippines when the Japanese attacked.  I've got the first 7 US aircraft carriers, except for the Langley, in 1/700.  And so on.

The only collection of kits I know I will finish is my Maschinen Krieger stash.  They're faster to build, and even at 1/20 scale, they're easier to display.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

Mine stopped growing a while ago. There's a good 300+ kits in there so that is more than for me, more than enough for a lifetime if I can get to be 400 years old at the slow pace I build.  My problem is that I start with an OOB build mentality and branch out to scratch build additional details complicating the build.

Can we do a Secret Santa where we just send kits?  I'd be on board.

This is a terrific idea.

I have about 30.  Mostly 1/48 aircraft.  I have given a few away.  When I started in this hobby about 3 years ago I didn't understand the large stash thing.  I was only going to have 3 or 4 and build one, buy one.  Now I get it.  I  like the reasearch, build videos, and looking at completed models here, and ultimately getting that kit. It's nice to have many options when inspiration hits me.

I think hundreds of kits is like another hobby.  Some guys like to collect.  A guy in my club has something like 10,000.  He's a collector.  He's also a very sick man.

Tempestjohnny, that was my rationale for creating my stash along with the reason that I was hoping to get my three kids into modeling eventually.  Well, I'm two years into my retirement, all three kids tried modeling but didn't stick with it, and my stash has grown into 4 digits!  My buying has slowed down now but I still have a smile on my face.  When the pandemic started I had lots of kits to choose from to build and there's never been a boring day of modeling.

My rationale for the stash I have is. At this point of my life I have the disposable income to buy kits. In 10 or so years when I retire I probably won't. So I'll buy now.

I keep it small, part of the fun for me is to go to the LHS or borwse the on-line stores. 2-3 kits max. Currently I have only 1 box and one WIP.

About 20 years ago, I was worried about the 20 kits I had in the stash, but that has ballooned up to almost 90 kits and then I retired from work.  I now have 75 kits in my stash plus untold counts of detail kits, paints and spare and extra parts.

Thanks TOJO. Most of my kits are from the 70's and 80's that I inhereted from my dad passing. Cars trucks planes and I think 2 ships. I plan on building them. Just life is in the way at the moment and I am still workoing on my shop for building. I will definately post photos when I start them . This site has been a fantastic insperation on getting all that done.

I'm currently north of 320. Cars, ships, Sci-fi, Aircraft and armor. I have plenty to last a very long time. I add some still as I am able to get certain kits I think are beyond cool, otherwise I'll pick one up if the price is stupid cheap. Someday these will be worth far more than they are now. Just look at today's prices vs several years ago.

I am sorry to say:

Seven large U-haul packing boxes full of Cars-,1958-2004, one or two with Planes -1956-1995, Two overflowing with Ships -1956-2004. Not counting the ones NOT in packing Boxes. At least twelve paper models unbuilt a six or seven under construction. This is the results of Fifty five years. many are to replace ones lost in 1982, others acquired over the years cause I "liked them."

I will, and have left instructions with my lady friend that when I go to the "Eternal Hobby Shop" that anything left behind, Built, Unbuilt and Started go to the Audie Murphy Rec.dept. My LEGOS, about half as much to either" St.Judes" (if they will accept them) and anything left to a "children in crisis center"

All I will have in my stash then Is a love of Mankind, My God and Family. Good Enough !! All in the works, to anyone that wants to finish them, My scratch Builds to the same! See simple Solution! Went to one of those places where they sold coffins. Nutin big enough all that and me.

One friend suggested I inventory all of it and put it in an armorglass, clipboard? on my tombstone and get buried with it all in a Watertight Container. Yeah Sure?

I'm a slow builder, so don't keep a huge stash of kits.  I'd say no more than 5-10 at any given time, and that includes some 1:72 that I will probably never build as I've kind of migrated to more detailed work in 1:48, 1:32.
