Airbrush Maintenance restored 3 Vls to functional status..
Posted by Eugene Rowe on Friday, March 3, 2023 2:29 PM

Being a long -term Modeler I have many airbrushes.I have had occasional times where all of the passages look clear but the airbrush would not pick up the paint or even water from the color cup or paint jar.I took apart three of the Paasche VL airbrushes and noticed a light build up in the pick up tubes .I used my cleaning brushes to scrub them and low and behold they started working again.!Typically after a painting session I will dip a Qtip into water and scrub the pick up tubes followed by running water through the airbrush until it shows no trace of the paint color. Then I move the needle back slightly and back flush it .I then remove the needle and wipe it off and spray clear water through it.

Good for you, Eugene - It's surprising how paint residue finds it's way into the tiny little places, then to cause such spray quality. Some years ago a friend gave me his Dad's old Badger 200, it ranged between not spraying at all, to just spattering droplets all over. After dismantling it I found dried paint pretty much everywhere.

Don Wheeler's website, "Don's Airbrush Tips," had plenty of info on cleaning and general maintenance. After hours of soaking in lacquer thinner, (remember to remove the air valve first,) and using the brushes you described, it still took lots of scrubbing and brushing to remove it all. Following the cleaning it sprayed perfectly.

Your VL's will go on to serve you well, nice job.

Thanks!I had to do the same on my Thayer and Chandler Vega ...ashamed to admit that I mixed up the needle and nozzle !once I put the correctly sized part she worked just as well as it always has!
