Picatinny Arsenel was right outside of town.  It was normal to see Skycrane copters going back and forth while outside for gym.  Sometimes I would see a tractor for the atomic cannon on the highway while out driving.

Sometimes while on the roof adjusting the TV antenna I could see aircraft heading for the airport.  One time there was a KC-97 down low with some fighters in formation behind it.  Always good things to see.

Good old days.

Caught my interest so i did an image search. The artist is an Australian named Michael Peck.

Cool cool!

I lived near the old Glenview NAS in suburban Chicago during the height of the Vietnam years...and we regularly got to see all kinds of military a/c from prop trainers to transports to Phantom jets flying over walking to and from school, or just playing in the neighborhood. Got to where we could pretty much ID the a/c type just by the engine sound.

It's a real visceral sense memory --combined with an overwhelming sense of childhood wonder and fascination -- that never leaves you. Wink

As a kid I grew up on the side of a mountain with lots of trees and valleys. Sometimes when a plane, prop job, flew over or near I would stop and listen and wait for it to appear. Listening and waiting I could hear the engines echoing in the valleys. The other day I ran across a painting of exactly this and it brought back many good memories.
