How many is too many?

From other threads much like this one I might just be one of the rare birds who has more completed models than unbuilt ones. That wasn't always the case as I used tp have between 200 and 300 unbuilt kits sitting on my shelves. After a drastic downsizing I now have about 10 unbuilt, 15 unfinished and about 40 on the shelves finished.

I think any modeler worth his Squadron Green has more unbuilt kits than built ones. (Sorry shermanfreak)

As for myself, without taking an afternoon off to count, I estimate I have roughly between 150-200 unbuilt kits sitting on the shelves in the basement, while I can count on both hands the number of kits I have actually finished. (Shame on me!)
I am working on that though. I have 4 kits in various stages of completion lying around right now so I am making an attempt, although it seems that a lot of times they are getting the best of me instead of the other way around.

I have to agree with heylonghair on that.
I don't have a big a stash as some, i have roughly 100 unbuilt, and I only need 1 hand to count finished ones,lol.
I got 7 on worktable right now and trying to stop myself from starting another.

I got very scared the other day - I've been reliably informed by a friend (a manager at my favorite model shop) that he's got just over 1000 (yes, one thousand) kits at home, all his, all unbuilt. I saw a lay-away computerised register receipt of his a couple of months ago for his latest purchase, and the receipt was about two feet long.
There's another regular who comes (quite a nice guy, actually) in who admits to having upwards of two thousand unbuilt kits, almost all in 1/72 scale, all in large numbered boxes, all cross indexed with a computer file so he knows which kit is in which box. That's dedication (to what, I'm not sure)...................

Well, not including all the kits from my childhood that are in storage because I cant stand to see how poorly done they are, I have about 3 finished kits, and I have well over 50 kits started, and none unopened. I bought some kits on sale, started them, and got bored.

you mean you're supposed to build the kits? I thought I was supposed to just open them up and admire them. who'da thunk it?

Anyway remember what a friend told me once: too many is never enough!

I'm actually just like most of you, with the exception of the "1000-kit-took-more-time-to-catagorize-than-if-I-built-them" guy (no offense.) In the last year or so, I've managed to collect only about 30 or 40 kits, with about 10 somewhere in the middle of completion, with everything from the 1/350 Missouri to 1/72 B-17F and everything inbetween. I think the missus was starting to get a little mad when a local hobby shop ran a "buy 1 get 2 free" sale. Oh, the joys of marriage.

Buy 1 get 2 free???...and you only have 30 or 40??? Maybe you can get them to talk to our local hobby shop. That would be awesome! Mind you, like you mentioned, I might be in the doghouse for awhile. Hey, that might make a good modelling room.

Unfortunately, the store was clearing out their model section and only had about 60 models in stock, half of which were old 1/72 and 1/144 snap kits. At least I got what I did. For example, the last lot I picked up was the 1/48 Tamiya He219, 1/48 Academy Mig-29 trainer, and 1/32 R/M F-4 "Mig-Killer" kits, all for $35. Believe me, if they had anything else at all of interest, I'd be in a doghouse the size of a small birdhouse.

I have well over 2000, maybe over 3000. I used to do the vendor thing at hobby shows and I'm an old kit collector. I buy between 5 to 10 a week and have for many years. I buy a lot of kits just to see what a new companies product looks like. I know I need professional help

Long before the wife and kids, I had a cabinent shop make me a case, 4x6x1.5 ft with adjustable glass shelves. 30 years later there are about 30 models in it. I've gotten rid of some over the years as the skills have improved. I've probably got 200 in a couple of rooms in the basement, with 10 or 15 in process. The wife wants the cabinent for her own collectables. Right. If I see a kit I like at a price I like, it goes in the collection. A hedge against retirement.

I have too many. My wife tells me.

I stumbled into eBay and have hunted any 1/72 kit I wanted as a kid and couldnt afford then. I am not sure I really can now.
A few shows and a few friends help me get more interested and work on new techniques such as the air brush.

When you are storing kits everywhere the you may have too many -- or need another storage place.

I have 107 models already build (they are from different times - the oldest is from 1970!) and 65 on my waiting list - only a few of them are unpacked, most of them are at least cut of from sprues (for me it's the biggest pleasure to do it and to dreaming how it will look already finished !) Well, looking at everyones replys, i must be some kind of a rare freak in modeling universe. I have 9 unopenned kits,1 in the work bench and 8 finished.
Anyway considering that i´ve started modelling 2 years ago, maybe i´m just geting started...

I have only 5 built that I consider worthy since they were done with an airbrush(late bloomer). My son has about 18 old ones that I built or helped him build. Currently I am working on 3 models and helping both my sons with a project of their own. I also have 3 others that I haven't started on. I try not to get too far ahead, because my mood can change quickly.
