Well I don't know how good my responses are. The best I've been able to come up with are:
"You know the price will just keep going up"
"They've discontinued production on this one and their getting harder to find"
"But this one will just about fill the collection out"
"I'll do this one next"
"What do I have to buy you to let me get this one"

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Let me just say that they don't always work, sometimes she gets that "Not Today" additude I can't seem to break through. After 22 years I've sort of learned when to pick my fights and when to backdown for the sake of my sanity.

1. I dont have this one yet

2. This is a limited run kit

3. So how was your day dear??

4. This one is not for me.. its for a friend of mine, ya thats it....(crossing your fingers behind your back)

5. Where did that come from?? or how did that get here!!

6. I figured you'd like the paint scheme on this one

7. So how was your day dear??

8. It was the only one left in captivity(my favBig Smile [:D])

I am sure I have said a few others but these stand out right nowBig Smile [:D]Tongue [:P]

My room clearing responses.....

Gee I don't know sweety, how many before you think it equals that new horse I bought you last year.....

But the others looked so lonely...

But the other guys have one...

The guys on the forum said I should get this one, they said it was cool and they would laugh at me if I didn't.

Did I buy that?

Just remember that I take NO blame for her adverse reaction to any response. You're going to have to take your lumps just like me and Mike.Black Eye [B)]
Also on the "Buy her something" line her price is usually DIRECTLY proportional to what you plan to spend so you credit card WILL be put to the test.[:0]

How about the old gotta get it right now dear while it's :
a) on sale
b) before it goes out of production
c) it is out of production and this is the last one of its kind in Canada
d) because the hobby store is thinking of closing its doors permanently
e) it's a special import from Poland and Poland is thinking of closing its doors permanently
Oops ... just got busted, she's looking over my shoulder and informs me that she never believed any of these LInES anyways.

Tim ...

Thanks for the advice ... and, of course ... if I use one of these great answers ... I will always take full responsibility for the results. I would never blame a brother or sister in the hobby for any nasty results.

My wife simply can not pass by a book store without going in and bringing out into the light of day at least one or two or four or five books ... so, I just have to keep an eye on the book cases ... yes cases ... in our living room, dining room ... bedroom ... um ... hallway ... bathroom ... stairway ... yes, I think that is it ... for new books and then conduct myself accordingly. Hobby shop ... here I come!!! Evil [}:)]

That's right, use ANY leverage you can get!!!!!!!!
It may be the only shot you get.

My g/f and I have an understanding, I won't say anythijng about the number of shoes, purses, outfits etc she buys if she doesn't complain about the number of kits I have.

I'm right there with Kaleu - My girfriend asked that exact question one day after I came home from a kit hunting expedtion in Detroit. My answer was short, sweet and to the point: "why do you have X number of shoes and only two feet? She laughed and understood. It's been a running joke with us ever since whenever a new kit - or shoes - come into the house.Tongue [:P]

Sorry guys, I had to let the other side read this thread. She says who could argue with "But it was on sale..." and her other responses were , "You could have worse vices". "Best husband babysitter I could find"
I started to do "husband math" and figured no matter what, we are still behind on the arms race. Look at models as male jewelry. How many sets of earrings, charm bracelets, necklaces, pearls, drop pendants do those kits equal.
Its still better than if we built real planes or cars, got into photography and had to pay for real models (thats bad how?), hung out down at the local bar, had our nails done, hair (my whole life I never paid more than $6 for a haircut), I don't have to color coordinate my sneakers with my outfit, my boots with my top, or my shoes with a purse.

Horse shoes every few weeks: $50
Periodic worming and shots: $100
Time with a trainer: $35
Special coat to ride in: $100
Horse show entry fees: $50
Ability to go out and buy a kit when I want: Priceless

hi , i counter this question by replying , the skills i hone on my model making are improving and when you ask for a job to be done arround the house , it is those skills that help sort it out quickly . so each new kit hels in the long run, helps you . cheers ian

... this thread is getting better and better ... thanks for all the great ideas !!! Evil [}:)]

...shermanfreak; I really like your answer to the age old question that goes ... "it is out of production and this is the last one of its kind in Canada". I would have to insert my country of course ... but, it just might work !!! Thanks a bunch ! Approve [^]

...kaleu; Your idea ... not mentioning the number of shoes, purses, outfits and all those other things your partner purchases ... if she doesn't mention your hobby purchases .... hmm, perhaps an agreement like that is in my future ... ??? Thanks for the idea ! Smile [:)]

...bubbamoosecat; Your really smart counter-question ... "why do you have X number of shoes and only two feet?" ... now that is classic ... I would never be sharp enough ... at short notice ... to come up with that one ... may I borrow it sometime??? Wink [;)]

...renarts; Your wife has put forth some of the same reasons that I have used over the years ... "I could be out enjoying more expensive hobbies ... like golf or something" <grin> (sorry to those of you who enjoy the ancient sport of golf - I just never picked it up) ... "I could be in a bar somewhere" (not that I haven't stopped in the local tavern for a short brew now and again ... but you get the idea) ... Anyway ... tell your wife thank you ... Smile [:)]

...iansadler; I really like your theory that: "the skills I hone on my model making are improving and when you ask for a job to be done around the house , it is those skills that help sort it out quickly . so each new kit helps in the long run." I can only say that that is very smooth, yes smooth indeed. Thank you ... !!! Approve [^]

Well, keep the ideas coming ... I feel that this thread can help promote the hobby and contribute to warm and blissful homes for the hobbyists. Thanks again!

My shelf (desk, bench, storage unit, etc. ) isn't full yet.

So I can stay home with you and the kid(s).

Well...I suppose I could just put a supercharger in the ________ (insert name of family grocery getter here) Arr Arr Arr (done like Tim Allen)

But it's for teaching the kid fine motor skill (patience, etc).

I'm helping the local 4-H (FFA, Scouts, etc.).

This thread just gets better and better ...

...unnamedplayer; I really like your: "it was a present from a friend." I really wish I had thought of that one ... I think it might work a time or two! Wink [;)]

...claymore68; and, your "But it's for teaching the kid fine motor skill (patience, etc)." is priceless ... my wife would go for that one in a big way ... Wink [;)] ... I hope you won't mind me using it soon!

...paulnchamp; you are right ... it just won't do to use the same answer over and over ... perhaps a fellow could keep a little note pad ... you know ... one with all of the really good answers written down ... and a little mark and date as to when they have been used ... oh, and maybe a little note as to how that answer worked ... yes, a note pad could be very useful I think !!! Evil [}:)] Thanks a bunch guys !!!

Hi mates ! I should say I'm lucky guy - I've never heard this question from my wife - she is not specially interested in my hobby, but , from the other hand, she doesn't have any contras ! More - she buys me models for birthdays or Christmas (being in touch with my "friendly" model shop) ! From my point of view, I support her with her bonsai trees culture - and (I hope) we are both happy ! Aleksander

It's funny that I just ran across this thread. My wife and I were just having this argumen...err...discussion during lunch today (just after I bought a 1/48 scale Ju-88C-6 and a Ju-87R-2). She wanted to know why I needed more when I already had 22 kits in the closet unfinished. My reply was, hey, I bought you a car last year (when hers began dying) and living room furniture just last month. Her reply? "Yeah, but we both get use out of those things...". Arrrgghhh! No quick reply!

I blame her for it all, anyway. She works at a craft and hobby store, so she gets all my model stuff at 15% discount.

My answer(though I am yet unmarried, it works when my parents ask!):
"Well, I wanted it. And besides, I'll have to have SOMETHING to do when I'm done with these ones!"

And when simply asked "Why did you buy that one?", Simply answer:
"Because I didn't buy the other one!" After they look at you for a second or two, say:"Was that a rhetorical question or something?!" or"Ask a stupid question and you'll get a stupid answer!". Works like a charm!

Hey AFIntel,
Tell her it does help both of you, because if you don't get to do the models you'll come over and bother her..... see, you both benefit.
