Tamiya lacquer removal
Posted by gbritnell on Thursday, July 17, 2003 2:44 PM
On 7/11 I posted a note asking for help in trying to remove the new Tamiya lacquers from a plastic car body. Apparently nobody has had to try it yet because of the modest responses I received but thanks for the one I got.
Now I'll let you in on what I found. EZ-off oven cleaner won't even make a scratch in the paint. I tried simple green and Castrol royal purple cleaners and still no luck. I ended up going back to the old brake fluid method and after many hours of soaking and scrubbing with a bristle brush I got most of it off. I then wet sanded to blend in the areas that didn't come off and and applied a coat of primer to smooth everything out.
The bottom line is, make sure you have your colors where you want them ( multi color paint schemes) or you're in for a lot of work. I hope this helps someone else.
