Upgrades to the Revell UH-34
Posted by Jim W on Monday, February 3, 2014 9:11 PM
Hello, 2 questions about building the Revell UH-34. It looks like an older mold, and thinking about upgrading I was wondering if anyone makes the web seats that were most common in the helicopter. The cargo area seats that come with the kit look more like seats out of a car. Also is there a 1/48 decal sheet for an Army version? Thanks for any input

I have the same kit and I'll be interested to see what answers you get. I'm more interested in knowing what reference material is available for this bird.

Current project(s): Hobby Boss: 1/72 F9F-2 Panther

                                  Midwest Products: Skiff(wood model)

Incredible how expensive this kit was going on Ebay a while back. I have this one too and would love to fix the interior with  a nice pe set. Here is a good reference start: www.cybermodeler.com/.../h-34_all.shtml

Cobra Company has an H-34 Detail Set which includes a completely new interior.

I just picked one of these kits at a local drug store. Was this A/C used as a Marine One copter at one time? I thought I saw a picture in one of my Aviation mags of one of these as a Marine One copter. If it was are there decals out there for a Marine One version? I am not a copter person and have done maybe 4 helos in my 50+ years of model building so your help would be appreciated.

I think you are thinking of a HH-3. But this aircraft type was used in AirWolf maybe someone could put out Santini Air markings for this kit.

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

The 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron the only Squadron to get an Air to Air kill and an Air to Ground kill in the same week with only a F-15 http://photobucket.com/albums/v332/Mikeym_us/

Yes, the VH-34 was used as Marine One from '58 to '64.  I don't think there are any dedicated decals for one though.  You should be able to piece them together from others though.  Really, all you need are the kit decals and a white MARINES decal.  The red/yellow "rotor warning" decal for the tail should be in the kit or easy to find in another set.

Thanks for the sanity check Arty. I knew I saw one of these copters in Marine One markings, but it was a long time ago. BTW, I think 1984 has arrived.

Points of interest for those who are interested. At the time the VH-34 operated as the presidential helicopter BOTH the Army and the Marine Corps shared the responsibility to transport the President so there was a Marine One and an Army One helicopter. Also note the main landing gear in the above picture. The main gear have inflatable floats attached for a possible water landing. The VH-34 served president Kennedy through President Ford. Finding pictures and information on these helicopters has not been easy and any help (known sites) with color pictures would be appreciated. This Revel kit in 1/48th scale was re-released last year some time and was announced in FSM's "kit releases" section. (I forget what month) These helos also saw duty in Southeast Asia with the US and ARVN.

I can't recall any sites specifically addressing the VH-34s but I've got walkarounds of a couple of former ones, an Army VH-34 (at Pima Museum IIRC) and a USMC one on gate guard duty at MCAS New River.  I'll try to post some pics when I get to that computer.  It might take me a while. The VH-34 wasn't too different than the standard UH-34/CH-34/HSS/HUS and there are a bunch of good walkarounds on the net of those.  Major differences for the VH-34 from what I recall are the windows on the sliding cabin door (larger) and obvisouly the VIP interior.  If you don't have it, I would highly recommend Lennart Lundh's H-34 book.
