Kittyhawk 1/48 AH-1Z Viper
Posted by BrandonK on Monday, January 19, 2015 2:46 PM

Hey guys,

I spend all my time in Aircraft building 1/48 WWII planes, but I couldn't pass up the chance to buy this awesome kit.

Have any of you had any experience with this particular kit? Pros/Cons/

Has anyone had experience with Kittyhawk kits?

Thanks for the information fellas, in advance. Perhaps I may work this into a GB if anyone has such a thing coming up or going.

Thanks,

BrandonK

You will need to tell us how it is.  It just came out this week, so it is brand new.  You are the first I have seen that actually has one.  From what I have seen, it is really nice.  I am waiting for them to upscale it to 1/35.

I saw this kit yesterday and my mouse-clicking finger really started twitching, I would love to hear your thoughts about this kit!

Oh great, I get to be the Guinea pig. Any idea on Kittyhawk kits in general?

I have their Jaguar GR1/GR3 and it looks like a well molded kit with a fairly complex fuselage fit, but good detail overall. The plastic has a pebbly texture, but I have yet to see how much is color and how much is surface. Of course, you can see all of the above by looking at your Viper in box.

There are good reviews of KH kits on www.cybermodeler.com with several quick builds and full builds. Hope that helps you to see what you're in for, and please share your build so the rest of us will know.

It's a very cool subject, and the CAD previews looked great.

...is it the super cobra or a new 4 bladed version with three engines...
It is the latest version Cobra used by the USMC, the AH-1Z "Viper". It has two engines, a four blade main rotor, and a four-blade tail rotor. It shares about 80% of its parts with the latest USMC Huey as well, the UH-1Y "Venom", which is the next-generation Bell 412 / UH-1N. Kitty Hawk has said they are also working on a 1/48 UH-1Y as well. Next they need to upscale both to 1/35.

The kit is en-route from Spruebrothers. I will open it when it gets here and let you guys get a good look at the contents. I'll take a look at the quality and the sprues to get an idea of how well made it may or may not be, but since it's a new kit it should be crisp. Hopefully, nothing is wrong as some kits that are new have issues. We'll see.

BrandonK wow those are some beefy tough looking helicopters. The State of Washington uses the old Cobra model as spotters for firefighting. They get them from the Army for $1.00 want one!!!!

Kitty hawk is hit and miss. I believe their intentions are in the right place, it they leave a lot to be left desired. I was contracted by Lockheed Martin's exhibits department to build the kitty hawk F-35A and B, ajd while there was great potential, there are a lot of head scratching moments. Wings that are supposed to attach to the structure with male/female peg system, however, there's female attach points on both parts, so not happening. Instructions were a bit baffling as well, as I think the person who wrote and drew them must have been working with different molds, because a lot of stuff was mislabeled or just not present at all. In the end, a lot of their stuff fits nicely, it's just a pot of work to get it figured out. They may have gotten better over the past couple of years, but their C model 35 recently dropped and still has the same pre existing issues as the other.

Well, I guess we'll find out soon enough. I'll pay attention to the instructions also to see if they match the kit. Fingers crosses.

I'll let Brandon post pics (I don't want to steal his thunder), but I got mine from Sprue Brothers yesterday and it looks really nice.  I particularly like the fact that the clear sprue comes in a little thick cardboard box inside the larger box.  The decals and PE are in a small ziploc (nice as I always ziploc the decals when I get a kit to protect them) and there is a small ball bearing that I believe is included for rolling PE, though looking through the instructions I see a fold or two, but nothing hemispherical that might require a ball bearing roll.  This will be my first Kitty Hawk when I get to it so I'm not sure if this is standard for them.  As for the packaging, I can tell they are modelers and have gone to lengths to package the product nicely.

I'm a bit confused on one thing:  The box shows you can build 3 aircraft.  HMLAT 303 aircraft 640 (black, gold, int'l orange and grey aircraft, HMLAT 303 aircraft 615 (dark and light grey), and then U.S. Marines aircraft 44 (no squadron that I can tell).  The decals are included for all three aircraft, but there is no marking guide for U.S. Marines aircraft 44, and 2 (one in the book, one a separate sheet) for 615.  Kinda confusing but not a huge deal.

It does look as if the front and rear cockpits are pretty much the same.  I'm not overly familiar with the Cobra, but I would imagine they'd be different like an Apache.  Anyone know?

I'm hoping my kit will arrive today. I will definitely be posting pics as soon as I get a look at it. I will also do a WIP here for it as well. I will most likely need some help as i am not familiar with helis like I am with prop driven birds. Some of the nomenclature will likely be lacking for you seasoned vets.

I finally got my kit yesterday. I will post some pics and do a quick novice review of the contents later today. In the meantime, if anyone else has the kit and wants to do a WIP, go for it. I have 5 GB's I'm building on at the moment and I will put this off for at least a few weeks. You won't hurt my feelings any by beating me to the punch.

Alright gents, here we go.

I had time today to review the kit and open everything up and here are my initial feelings.

Since it is a new kit one would expect it to be pretty nice, and it is. The surface detail is very nice with panel lines that are light, in that they are not too wide or deep but more scale accurate than many kits. The rivet detail is excellent with rivets around most panels. This detail will show really well when hit with a wash after painting. Very realistic.

There are 4 sprues plus one clear, in a box. The clear parts are very clear and very crisp, they don't need any Future dipping but they are not smooth when looked at at angles. What I mean there is even though the glass is clean and clear it is bumpy to the eye as light reflects off of it as if it were super warped, and it is not, it is very smooth. When viewed straight on, this is not a problem. It only does this at certain angles. You can see what I am referring to in the image.

The parts on the sprues are crisp and clean, very little flash and what there is will clean up easily. The detail on most of the parts is high and will detail up nicely. The kit does include some photo etch of various screens and a set of seat belts, all unpainted. The front gun looks nice and I also bought a photo etch kit for it and compared the two. The barrels are very good on the kit, slightly better on the PE, but the clamps are far superior on the PE, as one would expect. It'll be a nice add on.

The cockpit detail is not too bad. All the switches and buttons are molded in so one can paint it up as detailed as your skill will allow. There are also a set of decals for the consoles and instrument panels, but with the raised details it will be a challenge to use them without issues. And I think they are pretty weak when compared to what a good builder can do with some work. I plan to detail my kit up with out the use of those.

Some of the pieces on the various sprues are very very small and could easily be lost. I think the level of detail molded into this kit is quite high. I don't think many will be disappointed. I think the kit will build up nicely.

The kit includes decals for 3 birds and they are very nice and sharp in detail. The instructions are a booklet and they are very clear and well illustrated with color foldouts of the paint and decals details. Very nice indeed.

I'm sure I am forgetting lots of things, but here it is. Any questions, please ask. Like I said, it will be bit before I jump on this as a WIP.

NICE!!!  I'll be watching the progress on this one.  As much as I like most of the low-vis schemes, I also really like the colored scheme with this kit.  Tempting....very tempting!

Since I'm a sucker for good box art, it's really helpful to see what's inside! Thanks for taking the time to photograph and review the contents. Looking forward to your build.

Just a quick heads up. I will be starting this build in a few weeks. I have never done any Helos before, so any advice along the way will be greatly apprecated.

I am trying to build a Kitty Hawk Saab Gripen right now, and am glad it's nearly done except for painting.  I'll never buy another of their kits again.  Nothing fit right, lots of errors in instructions, lots of flash on the sprues to clean up.  I hope that these problems are particular to just my kit, and that all of yours are just fine.  Once I get it all puttied, primed, and painted, I think it will look fine.  Not for beginners due to tons of tiny detail parts and fit problems.

That three toned red/black/grey paint scheme is smex-ay! I hope you are leaning towards that scheme.  :)
