Yet another sucker for punishment builds Revell's Huey Hog--questions
Posted by dirkpitt77 on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 7:03 PM

We all know the joys of this kit, and I have decided to test my mettle once again. Last time I did it I was 14, with the expected results. It's time for a rematch. This is kit 5201 with a single version in Marines markings. I may elect to leave off the weaponry in favor of depicting a slick.

I thought I remembered a thread from quite a while ago detailing a process where the builder made his own quilted covering for the insides. I was toying with doing this in order to conquer the ejection marks. Also, are the curtains on the back bulkhead accurate? So far I haven't turned up a reference picture showing curtains here. Most pics show the red fabric being backs of troop seats, in a different arrangement on the bulkhead--most certainly NOT curtains.

If anyone knows of any build threads oriented toward accurizing I'd be interested to see them. No aftermarket will be used here, so scratch is the order of the day, with possibly the exception of using some US Army markings to bring it closer to an actual UH-1B.

Thanks!

Chris

I think the one time I saw the quilted covering done it was milliput and dental floss.  I want to say the builder rolled the milliput (or other putty, whatever it was) out flat and then did the quilting with the floss.  Afterwards he sanded along the quilting lines to give it that lumpy look I think.  I'll see if I can find it.

I love the look of this helicopter but I've never had much luck building it.  Quite honestly, I think the last time I wrestled with this kit was back when I was 14 as well.  Helicopter: 1.  Me: 0.  Ha-ha-ha!

Even though it's been a while, I still remember those red curtains in the kit.  Would it have killed them to at LEAST include some coordinating throw pillows???

No kidding!

I'm leaning towards doing this in civvie colors--green with a white stripe as a firefighting bird. I think I can rebuild the back bulkhead and the rear floor from scratch. Need to get rid of that molded in ammo box for the guns, and those curtains. I have to pick up some Milliput anyway. I might scratch new seats without armor, too. If I can get the interior to look good, maybe the other flaws will attract less attention.

Hey Dirk, I havent made that particular application of quilted material for a helo, but I've done it for other aircraft.

I have a piece of plastic screen with square holes. The way its cast there's no weave, it's just like a piece of square pattern perf with thin bars.

I rub down a piece of aluminum foil over it, then cut out the piece I need on the diagonal.

EDIT: and use the side with the positive bumps!

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Hello!

A good set of plans might come in handy - there's one book that has just such plans in 1/48 - it's this one:

www.toratoratora.com.pl/pl,monografie-lotnicze-108-bell-uh-1-iroquis-huey-cz-1,3,188,0,0,29042.html

At about 10$ I think it's worth having, if you're building a Huey.

Also, be sure to cut out the "hell hole" - the openieng in the bottom of the hull, curiously this is almost molded closed, in all models! Through this hole you could look all the way up to the main gearbox, where the hook attachment is.

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Paweł

I had started this build "umteen" years ago, all scratch built items.  I really need to get back on it one of these days!  I will just use a blank rear bulkhead with the center panels visible without the blanket.  I did use a piece of plastic etched to match the roof blanket to fill the hole in the roof.

Clear Left!

Oh wow. I'm seeing the kit as it should be, and not as it was molded. I've always wanted to do this with this kit but have never had the motivation.

That's fantastic! MOAR PLEASE.  :D

I've always been impressed with a modeler's ability to paint the attitude indicator.  Tips? Advice?  Not just this aircraft.  ANY cockpit.  You nail that AI and heads turn.  Just my opinion.
