Amodel Ka-18 1/72 diorama !! the most (un)know chopper in the world (helo finished page 3)

back on the ka-18 diorama:

after the black paint of terrain i give a light earth mix and after drybrush and mix before enamels dry with lots of mixed light brown , white, light yellow and so on. Then put with white glue some grass and stone.

Working with the kamov without rotors (don't glue it again) to check his space in the scene. some advice tips to improve the diorama? in mind to put some raw fence and some tall grass

VERY NICE job on the little Kamov, bsyamato! 

yes, preiser have for sure a box, and lots of set for luftwaffe, usaf, etc, and lots of unfighting poses soldiers in 1/72. The good things about preiser set is that are molded in hard plastic, easy to mod and gluing with normal tamiya glue . i'll get some link and post after

Most people looking for civilians are probably building trains, that's the 1/87 scale right? I can't say that I've seen 1/72 civilians anywhere, I have a hard enough time finding good pilots & crew in that scale!

yes is my hope, unfortunately don't get 1/72 civilians till now, preiser maded a good box but is hard to find on customers online

thanx vance i waited one minute before to look where the copter falls and check damages, this time was not a tragedy

There is no worse feeling than that moment you realize that a nearly-complete plastic model is hurtling towards the floor...

Still looks like you'll be able to recover from the fall. I really like this odd little helicopter!

Don't fear the final result, in all cases was a good study on short run kits, and will help me with the worse yak-28 kit.

Ugh.....sorry to see your Kamov had a mishap, bsyamato. No matter, though....with all the work you put in so far it's going to look fantastic when done! 

I like your sense of humor- "performed a landing without a take-off."

latest pieces on the rotor: used again metal rods and sprue/plastic rods instead of kit pieces

the bottom command plate

and fixed with metal arms

top rotor bars and ..... lift hook (?) added

and final test fitting for the rotor

that's all for tonight, tomorrow hope to priming the rotor

Nice job on those rotors!

Coming along very nicely - fixing the rotors looks like a small kit all by itself! I'll have to check my little Kamov kit to see if the rotor blades need correcting as well.

Some update on the little kamov:

rotor was a big mess

added control arms to the down rotor (the  pieces from the kit was too difficult to use)

checking the upper i notice that blades glues same as the down rotor... it's impossible on real thing !

The Kamov helicopters particularity is the two rotor turn in inverse direction, the from the up rotor must looks specular, but putting the up rotor in this way he flow the air up ... the helicopter will never fly in this situation. 

I resolved the mess with some cut to the base of blades , holed the pieces and fit metal rods inside

and now the rotor is in right position , also added the others control arms 

actual situation of rotor, all control arms glued , need only to add last pieces to the top and cut and fix lower control arms.

This little bird is coming along nicely, I can't wait to see the finished bird. Set it next to something else in 1/72 scale for a reference. Looks very good. Magoo

I don't have WIPs on those, that was before I joined the forum. Now for the double rotorhead - from what I remember the Zvezda helo (Ka-27) didn't pose too much trouble, I just replaced the kit-supplied styrene shaft with a metal one. Now the airfix kit is a lot weaker here - the rotorheads are heavily simplified and designed to be fixed together. Really awkward, if you do it as per kit instructions you get the two rotors to rotate as one assembly :((( I couldn't live with that, so I used two sets of airfix rotorheads (spares box!), lots of copper wire and styrene shavings and built new rotorheads you can see on the photo, rotating independently on a metal shaft. As I already wrote, getting at reference pics was tricky. Even more so in case of the dipping sonar mounted under the tail boom, which the kit omits alltogether. The more difficult on the ka-15 probably will be the double rotor, how was on this two kits?

It's a little highjacking, but since the Ka-25 got into the conversation I wanted to share this pic:

And there's also a very nice Ka-27 from Zvezda (thay also make a lot of variants)

Both of them are very nice kits, with decent fit and not so much detail and were whole lot of fun to build. The problem with them babies is if you want to detail them further, reference is not easy to find, because, as with all soviet/russian stuff it's all still top secret.

Pieces seems not so bad but surely are easier to turn on high detail kamov!!
