Revell Huey Hog

I have completed my project. Check out the post 'Completed Huey Hog'.

Well, it seems that I have almost completed me project. 

I will leave of all the ordinance, and I plan on painting it a olive drab. I could paint it black, but I don't have a good decal set for that. Any thoughts?

If you are going for historical accuracy rather than just a fun build and using the kit's USMC decals, leave all of the ordnance (guns, grenade launchers, pods) off.  The USMC Hueys (UH-1Es) never flew in any of the configurations offered in that kit.  They had completely different mounts for their guns and pods.

I built this one about 2 years ago.  It is a tough build, especially around the front and the windscreens and the lower canopies.  I painted it in a what-if desert sand scheme.  All I can tell you is try to have some fun with it....

It's amazing how we get this particular model for a steal only to later find out how bad it is!

The same with me, after filling and sanding for ages and in the prosses loosing allot of raised detail I boxed the thing till I am extremely bored one day LOL!

I don't think the masses of flash and even the many in-acuracies is such a big problem if you go into the build just for fun, but oh boy the bad fit of the furelarge is a headache for me.

Maybe I should whip it out the box and see if I can beat it into submition , I only need to sand off the 1/2 Lb of putty LOL!

This one needs more than "a little TLC".  It is confused between a B and a C.  It is actually closer to a C model.  It would be easier to make it a C than fix it as a B.  Like I said, to me it is not worth the effort.  There are better kits out there, maybe not in 1/48, but there are in other scales.

This article on Scale Rotors, and its replies, lays out your options of what to fix and add/remove to build either an A, B, C, or E/M version from it.  None are rally that easy to do accurately.

By the way, the weapons configuration on it is inaccurate as well. Go figure.

I think I have to disagree about the Hog kit being closer to a UH-1C than a UH-1B.   As I posted in the link in Gino's post :

It is possible to build a pretty good UH-1B with just the kit parts and the new narrow chord 204 rotor.  As you mentioned this has to come from a UH-1D/H kit and should be cut down from a scale 48ft to 44ft.  For rivet counters the rotorhead should also have blade counterweights added to the blade grips for a UH-1B.  The particle separator isn't a problem if you are building a post 1967 Vietnam UH-1B as the bell mouth intakes were replaced on most B models about that time. However, the M-16 system was also phased out around 67 or 68 so the M-21 minigun system would be much more appropriate for a bird with the particle separator installed. 

You would also need to omit the roof mounted ppitot and fabricate a nose mounted one.  I plan to build several B's with the ones I have.  You might consider using the M-5 system and the M157 pods and make your "Hog" a "Frog."  I know most folks like the M-5 40 mm as it makes the helo look meaner.  But as Gene said the M 16 system was never used operationally with the M-5.  I have, hoever, seen the setup on a CONUS test bird.

You are probably right GeneK. Leaving the launcher off will make it easier to put the front decal on as well.

I plan on sticking for the most part with the instructions that came with the kit. I will be using the two M-60s and the rocket pods. I am still undecided on the grenade launcher. However, since I have already put the optional pilots in, I might out the grenade launcher on as well. 

If you still have the choice, I'd say leave off the M5 grenade launcher. With it, and the full gun kit as well, it would be next to impossible to get the thing off the ground since it would be too overloaded! Besides, the ammo drum for it isn't in there anyway.

i worked on the 1 to 1 scale model of that aircraft.the red curtains you speake of, are in fact the back panel of canvas troop seats.  they are either od green, or insignia red.  they have hanging clips, a sinch strap, and are held up my a length of pipe attached to the bulkhead or in the case of my aircraft, the transmission wall and removable posts attached to the floor and ceiling of the aircraft.

Yep, like I said, all of the gunships I flew had the seat backs removed and OD seats. Do you recall ever seeing red backs with OD seats? I know it would have been possible, I just never saw it done that way.

I was refering to basic modeling skills.The occasional dog of a kit keeps ya from gettin' rusty.

I'm sorry, but the kit is a dog.  I wouldn't waste my time on it.  It was great when I was 12 and didn't know any better, but not now.

If you want an accurate B model, get the1/35 Academy UH-1C and Cobra Company's B model conversion.  With these two items, you can have a very accurate and well detailed UH-1B with almost any weapons configuration you want as well.

Hey now...easy on the huey hog. Sorry for the outburst. That kit has some sentimental value to me. My dad and i(when i was 12) had our own group build with that kit. it was fun and that kit is near and dear to me still to this day. may even do another one just for that reason. it had its issues then as it does now but for the sticker price it sure isnt bad...

 I agree, it's one of few kits that exist that is somewhat accurate. I flew these in Viet Nam and needless to say I'm very fond of them. The kit does need some work, but I'm just happy to see guys still interested in my old bird!

I got this one in the stash.Ditto on the 'curtains'.That's what I thought they were.

Can we get a better pic of those pilots?

 Actually, they weren't "curtains", they were the backs for the seats. Both were a very dark "wine" red, and the backs usually were removed entirely, being useless in the gunships. Later seats were OD. Which weapons do you plan to use on it?

Thanks for clearing that up...sure look like curtains to me! Learn something new all the time on this forum.

Yeah, I have heard that even back in the day it was a pretty awful put together kit. I have my work cut out for myself!

So I have already progressed some what with the kit. The cockpit has been assembled and painted and the rotor assembly is just about ready to get put together. 

To Revell's defense, that is a new boxing of a pretty old kit.
