I crewed Rh-53ds in HM-14 1979-1982 and we never had interior insulation because they always leaked hydraulic fluid and we needed to see where it was dripping and it would soak the insulation making a big fire hazard. If it did'nt leak it was out of fluid.

Thank you all The masking ? The Big Ed Photo etch kit had a masking kit include. I'm not sure how good that is . I will be seeing soon , like this weekend . If the masking is not good . I use auto 3m fine line tape with body shop tape . I never have bleed thru with these tapes. I like Tamiya tapes , But found Body shop tapes cost little more then Tamiya , But I should not have to buy tape for long time . Rick

Howdy, noticed your H-53, looks real good...(see also Wow!) In any case the little ball thing on outside of the cockpit is a Flir/Wescam night vision camera. (I used to work for WESCAM) The camera(s) sit in the lower part of the ball, behind an oval window. Control of the ball is handled by a stack of electronics in the upper (finned cyldindrical part) which is affixed to the boom. The two hoses are electrical connections tied to on board black boxes and the pilots controller. System can be low light, IR, day vision (telephoto) with targeting information a/r. The "ball" can be any color, but the wire bundles are usually black plastic shrink wrapped and sealed at the ends for corrosion protection. Hope this helps. Regards, Chuck

I finished the second color . I thought it was little bright, like it stuck out like a sore thumb . So I took some Light ghost gray,  highly thinned.   I then sprayed that to tone down the Med. ghost gray  .

I  believe it looks so much better .

Enjoy

I remember refering to those bulkheads as the tail disconnect.  I use to work on these beasts, so let me tell you, you're doing an increadible job depicting one.

Looks really nice! I bought one of these kits recently because we would fly in them when they were carrying our M198 howitzers.

I know this is an old thread, but any updates? I would love to see the finished product.
