"Sneak Attack" diorama
Posted by Iowahawkeye on Sunday, August 31, 2014 8:38 PM

Hi guys:

I today posted in the general forum an introduction to myself, as well as several photos of builds that I have done in the last year and a half.  I thought I was posting them here...crap.  Oh, well, rather than posting all of the pics here, I trust you are able to check them out if you wish in the General Forum section.  I will post the one build that I had the most fun doing...and it is the one that took the longest.  I call it  "Sneak Attack", and it portrays a German mobile flak crew scanning the sky for any Allied sneak attack which might target the critical bridge position they are defending.  Meanwhile, some of the crew is fishing for lunch on the river below with a commandeered farmer's rowboat.  Just as they hook "the big one", they become victim to a rather different type of "sneak attack" by a hungry black bear.  I love injecting a bit of humor into a battle scene, and this one was a hoot to build.

This build certainly has its flaws; I know that the fishing rod eyelets are out of scale, but believe me, they took hours to make and attach.  I was pulling my hair out.  I think I had too many glasses of pinot noir when I took some of these pics, as a few could be more in focus...I also use a tripod now.  I  also do not like the camo scheme I painted on the crew...to me it looks too much like modern American or British camo...I was attempting the SS "splinter" scheme, but I clearly got the colors wrong...especially the contrasting dots.

In any event, please feel free to offer your comments, questions, and criticisms.  I am not thin-skinned, and will not abandon ship here just because I receive suggestions or am told how to improve my skills.  I want to take my modeling to the next level, but  I do not attempt or focus on absolute historical accuracy in my dioramas...I instead just try to have fun and add some half-way realistic details.  I love this hobby...and German armor builds are my passion.  I will post more of my builds here if you folks want, but you can see many of them in the general forum section if you wish. .
