Buildings/walls set in Diorama
Posted by Billmc on Monday, March 9, 2015 3:39 PM

I apologize in advance for the question, this might of have already been ask.  So i was building my first "Building", or kind of( so i built my first one about 15+ years ago), its going to be half destroyed . Its been a life time since i did it, and would love some doe's and don't s , ideas maybe a push into the right direction. I am going to half a German half track pulling a American Howitzer inside a bomb out Inn. So kind of think, the scene in Big red one, where the German are using a Barn to hide a tank firing out over a village.  LOL I know i do not think the Germans ever use American Howitzer during the war. I thought it would be Fun. So the Building, its going to be 3/4 standing, two story, with the back side completely bomb out. The Half track and the Howitzer inside the building. Thanks for any input.

Hi billmc, you didnt really say what type of structure. Masonry or frame..lots of ways to scratch build.if it's masonry ,I love the molds from hirst fine arts,if frame your gonna what to hit the hobby shop for some small lumber (think doll house). For the studs and joists etc.and remember masonry also used wooden joists. Hope thi helps. Mike

Hay thank you Mike, i spent all night last night looking on ideas to make Buildings and walls, wow times have change LOL.. The molds are real cool, but i like to rough it a bit and build it from scratch?, i think LOL. I will start out scratch, and if i am having trouble, i will go "mold". TY

I "framed" a building once using balsa wood from the hobby shop. You didn't say what scale you are working in. I'm mostly 1/35, so that is roughly 3/8" =1'.  For example, a 1/16 x 1/8" balsa wood strip would be close in scale to  a 2 x 4 stud for a wall. I used thin balsa sheets for wall boards and ceilings. Using the balsa for a wood framed building lets me "destroy" it in a bombed village scene.

Recon99, do you construct the building and or wall before you construct your destroy scene?, or build to what you want?.  I think what I am building is 1/35th scale?, I never can tell the scale measurement??. I am still learning there

Make sure when you crumble up the parts of the wall that has collapsed due to artillery of bombs, that the pieces are not thicker than the actual standing wall, a mistake I made.
