Supply houses for Diorama supplies?
Posted by RudyOnWheels on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 5:05 PM

Hello! I was wondering if anyone could put me on the right trail to some diorama supplies for a 1:35 m8 "greyhound" armored car I just built. I envision it hiding amongst some trees on a hill with some sort of Camouflage netting over it, with the captain outside "glassing" down the road/trail... i think the camo netting may be the hardest thing to find. What are some good sources for trees, shrubbery, etc, and of course the camo netting? Just regular railroading stuff? What would be a good material to use for building the terrain/hill? It will be small, prob 10x12 or so, on a picture frame....

Thank you for any help in advance! I tried the search feature looking for good diorama suppliers, but maybe did not use the correct terms. -Rudy

For trees, you might want to make your own. The ones you can buy are generally for railroading, and the larger ones on that site looked damned expensive.

For building up terrain, I use Styrofoam and I use celluclay over that for the ground.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

There are many things you can use from H.O rail scenics and buildings .Plus usually there is someone at a train show that can show you how to make your own trees .It's not that hard .

i have some pink thick insulation that comes in 2x2 squares and some acrylic caulking to make the cut edges look nicer. i use wood scraps if the elevation isn't much and cheap modeling clay. NOTE USE CHEAP ACRYLICS  to paint the terrain closer to the ground cover color so you don't have pink showing through). you can use sticks for tree trunks with clay covered twisted wire for branches with dried herbs for leaves. i am taking a gardening class and will be experimenting with leaves for use in dios. for camo net i use bridal veil. the edges need work but it looks ok. again sprinkle dried herbs, oregano works, onto the painted net.

Thank you very much guys! I never thought of bridal veil for camo netting! Maybe a bug net or fish net would work... You have stirred my brain, exactly what I needed LOL....

Thanks!

I use cheese cloth for camo netting.  For groundwork, I use styrofoam as well as foam sheet insulation, depending on what I have on hand, and Elmer's wood putty to cover it for texture.

I also recommend Woodland Scenics.  If you have a model railroad store anywhere near, but also general hobby shops, or even one of the chain stores like Michael's or AC Moore, you should be able to find WS products.

Hope that helps!
