Completed German Su-85
Posted by Bish on Monday, August 25, 2014 6:47 PM

I have just completed this for the Orphaned Armour GB. Its the old Tamiya 1/35th Su-85 in the process of being re painted and marked after being captured by German forces. I added Aber PE fenders and some items form an Aber PE set, as well as a metal barrel also from Aber and Fruil metal tracks. I first paint it with Tamiya XF-61 and then weathered that and added the tracks which were given a wash and pigments which also went on the lower hull. Once everything was together, I then applied the Dark Yellow using Vallejo Model Air DY. The only weathering on that was a light pin wash of Raw Umber oils. The markings were all brush painted free hand.

I used a figure from Tamiya's 251/9 kit, wooden fence and some items from the spares box. The two small paint brushes were made with some plastic rod and bristles from an old brush.

Thanks for looking, all comments, suggestions and feedback more than welcome.

Simple, yet well thought out. There is the fence in the background, the erect, static grass behind the fence, with the trampled grass in the front,  and the solo figure undergoing a task that needs no explanation. These elements coincide with the restrained weathering to produce a diorama that is pleasing to the eye.  Many elements that I can learn from, thank you.

Thank you, and my pleasure. I actually based the base on a few photo's of the real thing.

And this is the actual vehicle I built, again, it has the fence in the background with the short grass which I believe is the same location as the other two.

I try where I can to use real photo's not just for the kit itself, but also for the base and the terrain.

Bish, it looks outstanding! I love the fact that you have the soldier painting the tank! A great theme for this dio!

I know I read another forum member comments that mentions the color of the grass, but, isn't the idea of camouflage to blend in?

Just sayin'... Whistling

Thanks guys. I am glad the story has come across on this one, that is the important part of a dio, people being able to see what's going on without having to explain it.

Bruce, ye, good point lol. But even if you go for the realistic look rather than artistic, you do have to make some concessions so it looks right. Thought as I mentioned in the other the thread, while they are still close in the flesh, its not quite as bad as the photo's portray. I still need to work out the best setting on the camera for taking pics. I'm just glad my models are better than my photography.
