This is a bare bones dio that I created this summer when I wanted to take a break from armor projects. It is a Revell kit that went together pretty well. Hardest part was the rigging and tying all those blasted knots. Too bad the kit did not come with viking warriors...would have added detail and interest to a somewhat sparsely appointed kit. I wanted to have realistic floating ice in this scene, so I tried something that really worked well....microscope slides, Woodland Scenics' Realistic Water and Water Effects, wax paper, and toothpicks to sculpt the snow in random patterns atop the ice chunks. I was happy with the results...and creating the floating ice was dirt cheap for the ice material itself....I used simple microscope slides purchased in school projects area at Hobby Lobby (for about four dollars for I think ten slides). To create the ice chunks, I laid a slide down on wax paper, covered it with Water Effects in the shape I wanted, let it dry for about an hour, then carefully tapped the slide with a hammer and slowly pulled it apart to get the broken ice effect. (Be sure to wear gloves). I then placed the ice back into the scene after a second layer of Realistic Water was about 2/3 dry. A little finishing touch of Realistic Water added to the spot where I inserted the ice piece added to the realism by creating a slight melting effect. What do you guys think? I plan on using this technique in an Eastern Front armor dio portraying a tank breaking up ice while crossing a stream.
