Basic Questions
Posted by Leddy on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 2:53 PM
First, I have a perfectly sized piece of blue Styrofoam for a base but it has a 1/8 inch split on the side about 3/4 inch long. Is there any way that split can be filled so I can use this piece of Styrofoam? Suggestions? Second, I have a copper tow chain that I intend to use in the diorama. What color should I paint the tow chain? The rest of the diorama is done in Tamiya acrylic. I will use Mig pigments for rust. Thanks for your input, Leddy

Bondo is good stuff, or Durhams Water Putty. But I prefer Bondo.

Hello!

You might try looking here:

www.vietnam.net.pl/M55mod3en.htm

On this page I describe building a styrofoam diorama base.

As for the chain - try looking for some real-life chain and just try to duplicate what you see - works best IMHO. It probably would be natural steel, weathered but not too much rust - it would be constantly grinded away while the chain moves.

Hope it helps, have a nice day

Paweł

Split vertically?  Like in plan view?

Healthy dose of white glue and some straight pins to span the gap.

Split horizontally?  White glue and a bit of weight until set.

If the edges need to be ex[posed, I guess Liquitex Gell medium--which should not react to the foam.
