Your link is redirecting to a landing page which explains that it is a "closed group", Baron. Only members of the group can see posts or photos.

OK, the diorama I'm talking about is posted in the Facebook group, "The Scale Armory and Hangar".  This is the URL to the page:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/771183262979446/?fref=mentions

I'm able to click the link and get to the page.

But if you can't follow the link, and you're a Facebook user, search for that group, and you can see the photos.

Reviving an old thread - here's a great website I found.  European guy who has a wonderful English-language blog describing builds and how-tos on his very detailed dioramas, many of which feature explosions and fires.  Short answer: cotton, cellophane, and LEDs.

http://dioramas-and-models.com/how%20to%20do%20it.html

It's timely to revive this thread.  Just as some folks noted back in 2015, there is currently a post circulating Facebook of the Hellcat that crash-landed on the Lexington (CV-16), with an explosion of spilled aviation fuel.  The guy who built it did a great job depicting the fire in his diorama.  If I can find the post again, I'll post it back here to share with those who haven't seen it.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

Hi to all im new to forums and have been surrfing the diffrent forums as i build what ever i can get, And i have to say Wow the fire is awsome! And I too would like to see a you tube tutorial or even better yet one done on the Fine Scale modler site. I incorparate pyro into my models one that I just did was for the tamiya motorized ww1 mk five using pyro squibs and very small mixtures of diffrent energetic materials , at the push of a button on the display base the arttillary craters formed in the plaster base replicate relistic arti. Impact /flash and smoke. However great care must be taken for safety and also not to high order the display.! EOD GUY

I did it on my detonation dio (drag race car engine grenading) also on my warspite gets a few scars dio, if you check out the build log and look at the crashing fw 190 you will see a step by step photo of how I did it.

Here is a link to one I'm working on, not my best effort but hope to improve it.

Can you give a tutorial of how you did that?

Simply amazing!! I guess we are limited by our imagination only (and talent!). When the time comes, I will need the help of you guys so I can create gun flashes from a Spitfire firing at a ME-109 and with the ME smoking from the engine. Danny

I'm pretty sure they are using cotton and LED's. The prop spin on the Helcat is produce by an air source and a movable prop. I MAY give this a try on my up and comming destroyed Iraqi T-72 build. I'll have to see if what I think they are doing works.

I've seen these pics and others over the years but never a detailed description of how they were done.

So all of these are superb and take modeling fire to the next level, so how do they do it?

G I think this build is perfection. I've looked at it from different views and I'm more impressed each time. It looks like shredded cotton may have been used along with a fusion of paints and I believe at least one LED mounted light underneath. But the blending, the build, the prop everything is perfect. I'd sure like to find out how this one was completed. Working on these techniques is on my modeling Bucket List.

Np guys, I thought I remembered this diorama from the site a year or so ago. CN Spots is right though, dunno why I didn't think to just click on the 'Images' tab instead of going to the links.

Looking forward to the FSM IT guys to get the search engine going again.

Gamera

I think this might be the one BlackSheep was refering to? I can't seem to find it on the FSM and you can't see all the photos on Pinterest unless you register for the site.

Yes, that's the one! That is THE best diorama with explosions and smoke I've ever seen.

Google "skyhawk napalm diorama" and look at images.  That explosion is illuminated which, imho, makes all the difference.
