First Indochina War Vignette
Posted by Griffin25 on Saturday, October 3, 2015 4:44 PM
It's barely a vignette but I think it squeeks in. I completed this about 8 months ago but redid the plaque and sign today after I was reading a book on the war. Before it read "Isabelle" referring to the battle of Dien Bien Phu but after consideration this guy was more of a early 50's De Lattre line type. I used a Warriors figure, changed out the Bren gun for a FM 24/29 from a Tamyia kit and gave him a beard.

The First Indochina War is such an interesting subject. The French forces lost 75,000, including Vietnamese forces under French comand. I think it's an overlooked subject. The CIA flew covertly in support of the French and some of the first US casualties in Vietnam were CIA pilots. Two great books written on the war by an American are Street Without Joy and Hell in a Very Small Place. Bernard Fall.

Hello!

Nice build! The first Indochina War was a fascinating time, and, as usual with fascinating times, a curse for the people to live in... The situation in the South was also weird - all those factions fighting each other and not having enough power to take the lead. There were religious groups like the buddhists, Cao Dai, Hoa Hao, the Emperor, the military, the Chinese minority and my favorite - Binh Xuyen - Mekong river pirates! I sure would like to see a figure of the Binh Xuyen pirate.

Have a nice day

Paweł

Pawel you should do a conversion and make a Binh Xuyen pirate vessel. That would be a heck of a project and super original!

I'm going to have to Google those pirates and see what their about Smile

He looks really good. I agree, the first Indochina war is fascinating and it must have been terrible for all concerned. Bernard Fall's book are outstanding. I first read them probably forty years ago and have reread them many times.

Nice work, and a very interesting subject. The books you mentioned are top notch, you may also want to read The Last Valley: Dien Bien Phu and the French Defeat in Vietnam.

Earthquake McGoon.

Yes, McGoon. I was reading about him. That dude was huge. I didn't realize that they made it into Laos before he crashed. I thought they went down right there in the DBP combat area. He almost made it. I think they found his remains not that long ago.  I have to make a DBP diorama. I have all the pieces but you know how that goes.... I've been working on a V100 armored car for 8 months! More like staring at it for 5 months.........
