Ideas for my WW1 vingnette base
Posted by Griffin25 on Monday, February 1, 2016 9:18 PM

I painted this Verlinden WW1 trench base a couple of years ago. I added a rat, helmet, few extra sandbags, map and a piece of barrbed wire. It turned out really nice. The German corpse on the outside makes this mid to late war. I really wanted to put 2 late war 1917-1918 French infantry figures moving down it in a kind of combat trench raid posture. I converted 2 figures from the Tamyia WW2 French infantry set, the officer and a poilu. The poses were perfect but it didn't turn out right. The WW2 gear on the soldiers and my lack of conversion skills just didn't do it justice. I gave the poilu a lebel rifle and the officer had a WW1 era lebel revolver but the uniforms and webbing were not right. They had shirt colars and ties under their coats as well!

I am wondering what I should do. There are no mid-late war French infantry sets that I can find. There are single figures, Plusmodels and Metal Modeles, but the poses won't work. I don't want to go German or British because that has been done to death. ICM has some great kits, Italian, French, Austro Hungarian, but they are all early war.

Anybody have an idea? I might try again with the French Tamyia figures if I can't figure something out. Try to be a better conversion guy. I want it to be different from the many dio's I've seen. Italian late war would be awesome but that's a pipe dream.

I should be working on a Vietnam era V100 armoured car I started but I lost interest for awhile.

 Any ideas appreciated!

  Thanks, Rob G

Photobucket is all messed up right now. I'll post pics later. sorry

I like all the elements that comprise this dio, especially the woodwork. Along with the skeleton, the rat lends a macabre undertone.

Thank you. I'm trying to figure out what type of figures I'm going to insert into this. I want it to be an action / figures in motion moving down the trench but my choices are a bit limitted.

Looks great to me, does capture very well the 'little slice of Hell on Earth' that the trenches sound like to me.

No idea about the late war French infantry, could you maybe kitbash early war figures with Second World War figures? I know almost nothing about the French military so it's just a wild guess.
