TBF Avenger at Midway
Posted by MAC on Monday, November 7, 2016 3:52 PM

The Grumman TBF Avenger (designated TBM for aircraft manufactured by General Motors) was a torpedo bomber developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air and naval aviation services around the world.

The Avenger entered U.S. service in 1942, and first saw action during the Battle of Midway. Despite the loss of five of the six Avengers on its combat debut, it survived in service to become one of the outstanding torpedo bombers of World War II. Greatly modified after the war, it remained in use until the 1960s.

Thanks for looking

It looks to me that you used the old Monogram TBF kit. Which out of box is probably closest to type used at Midway, requiring only some minor mods to the side windows to make accurate for the initial production type.

But your markings here are late war, with the tri color camo scheme, USS Bunker Hill air group geometric insignia, and yellow cowling 1945 Tokyo Raids marking.

The TBFs at Midway were painted and marked differently. Blue Gray over Light Gray camo, six position non bar type national insignia and black 8-T-_ unit markings.

But overall a very nice result for a torpedo drop!

Fantastic work on the base, and getting the TBF on it.

MAC, no worries. I was not trying to rain on your work here, because I really like what you did here. Especially the torpedo drop effect. That is awesome.

I just have a fascination for that battle and have tried to learn all I can about it. Even with some of the accepted lore being disproven by the latest research, the tale is still incredible. Perhaps even more so now.
