Sodium polyacrylate mixed with water is used to make artificial snow for movies, but not for dioramas, at least that I know of, since it eventually dehydrates and reverts back to it's original state, loosing it's fluffy appearance. It is also used for disposable diaper filling....
I don't really see much else in the way of diorama usage.
