For fallen trees with bark coming off, sections of grape vine branches just can't be beat:

Once you figure out what diameter log you need, it is just outside.  Find a couple of branches the right size and cut to whatever lengths you need. 

Besides, nothing beats the real thing for realism.

For totally realistic log's , I went to a "Herbal remedy" type store and got some whole licorice root.

Just tell them your trying to quit smoking ... ( apparently it's used as a stop smoking aid. )

If you tell them you need it for a "modeling project" , they will look at you funny and start asking silly question's . They will still sell it to you .... it's just "frustrating "to try to explain modeling to somebody who doesn't get it.
