So today i decided i would try Static Grass for the first time , i brought a tea strainner 50p and a battery fly swatter £1 and followed the youtube video i found online was easy to do then hot glued a pot lid and cut a hole out , i brought static grass in 3 different sizes 2 mm 4 mm and 6 mm and 3 different colours 9 bags total and gave it a test , after 3 - 4 electric shocks when touching the tea stainner on the nail by mistake i figured out not to do that and keep a distance between the 2 parts , very happy with the finished reults this is the 4 mm test results just waiting for glue to dry now

RamboLooks like your test was a success. I've been wanting to make one of them myself next time I do a field scene.
That works great from the looks of it. I'm going to check that out. Thanks for sharing bud.

Hello!
Your results look good!
Putting a megaohm resistor in series with the strainer would protect you against those electric shocks without compromising the function of the device.
Have you tried mixing grass of different lengths? I do that and I find that it enhances the results a little, makes the grass a little more rough, good for dioramas showing the grass "unmowed".
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

That static grass came out fantastic. It looks like the small dykes in the rice paddies of Vietnam. I guess I'm going to have to google that video on YouTube for this.

That set up works great. For us here in the US go to Harbor Freight and get the fly thingie. I got mine on sale for like $2 a while back and converted it. Works really good.
Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!
Hey as a follow up on this, I just got the HF flyer and the fly swatter is on sale for .99!
Ive made these too.
Small, medium, large versions for under $15 total!
I'd thought about making the strainers interchangeable but the swatters were so cheap I didnt bother.
I think they work well. I've never used any of the commercial versions for comparison but these did what I needed them to do.
Tonight i was bored so decided to play with static grass and a base , used 2mm , 4mm and 6mm static grass with the home made applicator , then tried it out with some past builds
That looks fantastic. Sorry I haven't done my homework on this, but what is the white material on the base that the grass sticks to? White glue?
I'm planning a diorama that is a grass airfield scene.

There is an excellent tutorial on how to make a Static Grass Applicator by Luke Towan.
