1/48 B-25 Group Build! All Invited to Join!
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 2:52 PM

Tiny's original B-17 GB thread is going so well, and Vance's B-25 gift is getting a lot of attention, and since the kit's available, I thought, what the heck, let's try it!

I've got one on the bench that's almost finished, but I'll put that aside for now and grab a fresh Monogram Mitchell... (I know what the box says...Fergit it)

But you poor guys stuck with the AM Charlie and Dog-models can play too... I guess we can be friends... Even you guys with that 1/48 Revell B-25C from about '63... (If you got one but don't wanna build it, send me th' engines, would ya?)

My base kit's the 1999 Revell box release, "Jaunty Jo"... A glass-nosed version with either the early painted-over gun-nose or the bomber nose to choose from...

No start date, no finish date, just have fun, and take WIP-photos!...

First thing's first... I'm shooting the wings, stabs, and fuselage with Krylon Silver... This will facillitate the rubber cement  masking for the "chipping" after I apply the OD/NG (or NSSB/IB/W  for a PBJ-1J..Dunno which it'll be at this stage) paint and begin the weathering process..

Dang Hans! If I wasn't trying to start my own GB in three weeks and thinking of joining a treadhead GB with Tigerman I'd jump right in with my Monogram B-25.

Yeah, I know... excuses, excuses. Since you're not setting a finish date I may yet jump in at some unspecifed date.

I already built my "Jaunty Jo" kit but have two AM kits, A Doolittle and C/D. Leaning towards the B so count me in.

Long as it's 1/48th... Toast

I've started the flightdeck and bombardier's compartment... I'm re-working all the seats to look like the ones in the TB-25 featured in the current issue of FSM.  After checking some refs, I found the stock seats to be pretty good, but they need just a little more work...  I don't think I'm gonna waste much time or material on the radio compartment, since it'll be invisible, but the waist needs some stuff added, as well as the tail-gunner's position...

No, Photobucket resizes my pics.. But maybe you can get something from here:

http://www.maam.org/airshow/b25_waist.htm

MAAM's site is a bit better for resolution and size...

Oh yeah, for some of y'all...

In the pictures that're looking over the guns and out the waist windows, note the lack of the use of Future on 'em.....

This makes the fourth model on this page that I have started on at one time or another and put it aside.  B-25 J, B-26, B-29 and B-17.   Maybe I should resurect one of these builds!

Shot of a little detail on the top turret of the B-25.  Made the shields for the gun slots in the turrent, shell link chutes, pulley for cocking cable, springs on bicycle seat.

I think a resurrection is in order, especially considering what you've done to the turret assembly! Wow

LOL.. Hate it when that happens...  "Benito" looks pretty good!

At least you got "Jo" on hand, right?  I had a pleasant surprise, BTW.. I found another B-25H in th' stash I forgot about...  That makes two Js and an H I got to work on, plus the AM Charlie...

Thanks for the encouragement Vance!

I had actually made "flex" ammo belts by cutting a thin width of rubber band and stretched it slightly on a large flat eraser and then pierced it with the tips of straight pin cut down to about .50 cal size.  This was quite a few years ago and the rubber band deteriorated. I actally hinged the sight/armor face plate to rotate with the elevation of the guns so it stayed perpendictular to the guns.   Didn't get around to scratch building the foot pegs for the gun cocking levers and adding back the shell casing bags.  I was going to make the turrent removable and have a "stand" to place it in to show the detail.  A small model by itself.   Here is another angle on the turrent.

Hans, I have been on this forum for several years, and I still do not understand the concept of group build. Some people get slower when they get older! Is this just a matter of sharing and gleaning on the same basic project; while at the same, questions on other projects/aircraft are not welcome? Or, could you please give me an idea of what you have in mind.

I do have the RM B-25 B/C and the J kits. As well as two AM B kits and a G conversion!

Kinetic 1/48 YF-104A 5-2957

Trumpeter 1/350 USS Hornet CV-8

Hey jet I'm in the middle of the exact same kit/version and your's looks fantastic!!Yes  You don't see many of the "Benito" version so I'm glad you did that one (I wish the pic was a little clearer).  I'm interested in how you did the NMF, I'll check out the GB.

Hans, if okay with you, I'll post pics of the wip-finish of my B-25J "Benito"  build here (less than 50% completed) in addition to the Mafia GB.

Salt chipping, yes.  Scribing panel lines, no.  After seeing and fondling the real B-25s at the EAA Airventure recently, I can assure you there were no panel lines large enough to put my hand in.

Wrong scale for me, but I will be watching. I have yet to see a good Mitchell model with the right set of the overall a/c on the gear. Know why? Because I've seen pictures of the real thing every which way. Down at the nose, down at the tail, level.

Oh well, I'm working on 16 of them at 1/350.

bondoman,

Well, you have to take in consideration if the aircraft was fully fuel and max bomb load, half and half, empty, maybe struts not serviced to specs, lots of variables!  Some times it's jus the model, Monogram 1/48 P-51 has the tail wheel mounted to high,  B-17  has the main gear struts the same thing.  P-38's will sit extremely tail low with empty fuel tanks.  So it's up to the modeler to pay attention to detail, if that's his cup of tea,  and correct any flaws that bug him.

Clear Left!

Mel: That looks fantastic! It's a shame to bury most of it inside the aircraft where you won't be able to see it.

Shipwreck: You've got the basic idea of a GB already- a group of people build to a theme: aka Korean War subjects, B-17s, natural metal subjects, etc, etc, etc. You get a sharing of knowledge about the subject and the kits available as well as encouragement to keep working your way along. Most GBs have a time limit but Hans here is leaving it open on this one.

Pretty much all you need to do SW is to take photos of the model as you build it while keeping up a running commentary on what you're doing and why. Also enjoy the other builds, learn from them, and compliment them when you see something you like. It's something like a WIP from multiple modelers. You can always drop by the GB forum and check out some of them for an idea on how they work.

I'll leave it to Hans from here since it's his GB so he sets the rules Wink

Is this just a matter of sharing and gleaning on the same basic project... could you please give me an idea of what you have in mind.

It's nothing more than an "On-Line" get-together of a group of modelers who share the same or similar amount of interest building a particular model (like this one, the 1/48th B-25) or following a theme (The Battle of Britain, meaning only BoB aircraft are allowed, The Monogram Mafia, meaning the only kits allowed are Monogram kits, etc...).    Other themes are particular time-frames, conflicts, operations, or theaters of operation...

It also serves as a sort of "clearing house" for reference materials and construction hints, tips, and suggestions, as well as a chance for the gang to sound off and ask questions regarding a particuar kit or subject, and it's history..  Also, it'll serve as a lace for jokes, "war stories" regarding the subject,  triva, and othe useless information..

... questions on other projects/aircraft are not welcome?

"Not welcome" would be a bit strong, but unless it's a question on a technique or part(s) being used on the subject and whether it would/could work on a different one, it's generally restricted to the subject model, yes....

An example could be, "Could I use the R-2800 engine from the Monogram P-61 in the B-25J?".  Another perhaps would be,  "  I've got the brass p/e set form the Promodeler Fort and can I use the belts and waist guns in the Mitchell?"... (The answer to A: would be "Yes, but some plastic surgery is needed", and B: "Yes")

Group Builds in the Group Build Forum are a lot more "rigid" than this one though... This one has no time limit, no start-dart/end-date, and no participant limits... You can build as many 25s as you'd like to, in as many different variations as you want, for as long as you want, as long as it's 1/48th scale...
